Strikes Across Tyre and Bekaa

Israel carried out overnight strikes on Lebanon’s Bekaa valley and the southern province of Tyre, killing at least four people and reducing buildings to craters.

The Guardian said the strikes hit close to Lebanese army barracks, killing a man on a motorcycle in the town of Nabatieh, and killing and wounding people in the town of Chehabiyeh where the death toll is not yet known.

On Friday, the Guardian reported Israel killed 10 people, including a child and six paramedics, one of whom also worked as a photojournalist, and it said an Israeli strike on Friday morning released by the Lebanese ministry of health showed civil defence workers standing beside an injured person on a motorcycle in Deir Qanoun en-Nahr before an ambulance was bombed.

The Hindu reported that on Friday (May 22, 2026) Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon killed 10 people, including six paramedics and a Syrian girl, and it said the first strike hit the village of Hanouiyeh, killing four paramedics working for Hezbollah’s Islamic Health Association and wounding two others.

The Guardian added that in Hannaouiyah and Deir Qanoun en-Nahr, the Israeli military said it was examining claims that “several uninvolved individuals in the area, who were not the targets of the strikes, were harmed” and said it ordered the population to leave.

Medics, Evacuation Warnings

The New York Times said Saturday’s attacks exposed the mounting strain on a truce, with strikes mostly hitting towns and villages in southern Lebanon, a Hezbollah stronghold where Israel is occupying large swaths of territory and where tens of thousands of residents remain displaced.

It also said the Israeli military issued new evacuation warnings on Saturday afternoon for several towns across southern Lebanon, and it described how a truce reached in mid-April was meant to ease weeks of violence even as near-daily airstrikes continued.

In Deir Qanoun an-Nahr, the New York Times reported the Israeli military said it had targeted Hezbollah operatives traveling on motorcycles, and in Hanouiyeh it said it struck Hezbollah infrastructure sites where militants were present.

The Guardian reported that in a video of one of the Israeli strikes on Friday morning released by the Lebanese ministry of health, civil defence workers are seen wearing high-visibility vests standing beside an injured person on a motorcycle in Deir Qanoun en-Nahr, and it said when the ambulance came closer, it was bombed, killing two paramedics and a child.

The Guardian also quoted Hezbollah’s claim that “We are fighting our enemy on the battlefield, and it has grown frustrated by the strength and heroism of our fighters... so it resorts to unleashing the hell of its rage, might and tyranny to destroy your villages and displace you,” attributing the statement to Mohammad Raad.

Ceasefire, Negotiations, and Risk

The Guardian said Israel has continued striking Lebanon regularly, both south and north of the Litani River in south Lebanon, since a US-brokered ceasefire was announced in April, and it reported that more than 3,111 people have been killed since the latest round of fighting between Hezbollah and Israel started on 2 March.

It added that of those, 817 have either been killed or their bodies found since the ceasefire was established, and it said Hezbollah has continued attacking Israeli forces in southern Lebanon since the ceasefire.

The Guardian reported that the Lebanese government is seeking a complete ceasefire in Lebanon as its first priority in negotiations, as well as the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory, while the Israeli government is seeking the complete disarmament of Hezbollah and had said it will only withdraw from the 235 sq mile (609 sq km) area it occupies in south Lebanon once the safety of the residents of northern Israel is assured.

It also said Hezbollah has called for an end to direct negotiations between Israel and Lebanon, framing them as a Lebanese capitulation and surrender of its sovereignty, and it noted that the negotiations are linked with ongoing US-Iran talks.

The Hindu reported that the latest Israel-Hezbollah war began on March 2 after Hezbollah fired rockets into northern Israel two days after the U.S. and Israel started their attacks on Iran, and it said the Health Ministry reported the death toll in the latest round surpassed 3,000 earlier this week.
