Collapse in Odense
Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine in Odense, with TV footage showing the 34-year-old midfielder clutching his chest with both hands in the 65th minute before he fell to the ground.
“Christian Eriksen 'conscious' after another on-field collapse in Denmark match, national team says Christian Eriksen is conscious and undergoing further tests in the hospital after collapsing on the field again while playing for Denmark’s national team in a scary scene that had echoes of his cardiac arrest at the European Championship five years ago Christian Eriksen was conscious and undergoing further tests in the hospital after collapsing on the field again while playing for Denmark’s national team on Sunday in a scary scene that had echoes of his cardiac arrest at the European Championship five years ago”
Denmark’s football federation said on X that Eriksen was “conscious and, under the circumstances, doing well,” and Denmark team physician Morten Boesen said: “Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself.”

Boesen added that Eriksen “will now undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident,” and the match was officially abandoned by the referee in the 79th minute with Denmark leading 2-1.
The incident happened at Nature Energy Park in Odense, and the Danish Football Association said Eriksen was able to walk off the field after collapsing.
The collapse came five years after Eriksen’s cardiac arrest at the European Championship in 2021 against Finland in Copenhagen, when he was later fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD).
Players react, coaches speak
After Eriksen collapsed, Ukraine’s coaching staff were seen waving medical personnel onto the field, and players from both teams formed a ring around him as medics attended to the midfielder.
Denmark captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg told TV2: “(Everyone) reacted super-fast and with respect,” adding that he could “only compliment how much courage those who took care of Christian on the field had.”

Denmark coach Brian Riemer thanked the players and said: “The most important thing is that Christian is doing well and he is,” describing the post-collapse moment as “standing together” on the pitch.
The crowd initially fell silent before a chant of “Eriksen, Eriksen” went around the stadium, and after the match was called off, players and coaching staff stood arm in arm in a ring as they were addressed.
Wolfsburg said Eriksen had been taken to Odense University Hospital and that the club was following developments, while Manchester United said it was “encouraged by Denmark’s update on Christian Eriksen.”
What’s at stake next
Denmark’s federation said Eriksen was “conscious and, under the circumstances, doing well,” but Boesen emphasized that further hospital examinations were needed to determine what caused the incident.
“Christian Eriksen collapsed during Denmark's friendly against Ukraine but is now conscious, according to the Danish Football Association”
The match was abandoned with Denmark leading 2-1, and the BBC reported that the 34-year-old was able to walk off the field after collapsing and that there was ongoing contact with him and the hospital doctors.
Eriksen’s latest collapse also raised the question of whether it was related to his prior heart issue, since he had been fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) after his cardiac arrest during a Euro 2020 match against Finland in 2021.
The Guardian noted that the incident occurred during an end-of-season friendly between two sides who have not qualified for the World Cup, and it said Eriksen was “briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly … and walked off the pitch by himself.”
With neither Denmark nor Ukraine qualified for the World Cup, the immediate focus in the sources is on Eriksen’s condition and the hospital tests to determine what caused the incident.
