The Washington Post reported that Trump appeared to “scoop Downing Street on Sunday,” announcing the resignation “before any public statement from Starmer himself.”

Multiple outlets tied the intervention to a possible timetable, with CNN saying Trump’s claim came as speculation grew that the UK leader could set out a timeline for his departure as soon as Monday.

CNN also reported that a Downing Street spokesperson directed it to Starmer’s most recent statement made Friday, when he said, “There’s more to do, and that’s what I’m focused on, what I was elected to do, which is to serve my country,” adding there was nothing more to add at this time.

British Business Secretary Peter Kyle told BBC on Sunday that Starmer was reflecting on “political realities” this weekend, and said he would do “what is in the best interests of the country.”

POLITICO.eu reported that Kyle “pointedly declined to rule out such a move Sunday morning,” saying the prime minister was weighing the “political realities and challenges” he faces.

In response to Trump’s claim, CNN said a Downing Street spokesperson directed it to Starmer’s Friday statement, while CNN also reported that UK media was widely reporting Starmer will stand down Monday with support swinging behind Andy Burnham.

Trump’s intervention landed as Westminster faced “open succession chatter,” with POLITICO.eu describing Burnham as the figure most likely to steady the party if Starmer goes.

The Hill reported that Trump’s post came after a rocky period for Starmer, and said the BBC reported increasing signals that Starmer could begin planning to leave his role Monday.

Forbes said the proclamation came before Starmer’s official departure, noting that when asked for comment, a 10 Downing Street spokesman referred to Starmer’s Friday line to Labour Party staff: “there's more to do, and that's what I'm focused on.”

The Independent added that one source told it Starmer was discussing a plan to handover the Labour leadership to Burnham in September, while Le Dauphiné Libéré said Burnham was due to be officially installed as a member of Parliament on Monday at Westminster.
