Dr. Adam Hamawy Wins New Jersey Democratic Primary After Gaza Trip, Blind Sheikh Accusations

In New Jersey’s 12th district, Dr. Adam Hamawy cruised a Democratic primary on June 2 after traveling to Gaza on medical missions during the genocide and declaring, “We should not be funding foreign militaries or making arms sales to countries committing gross human rights violations,” including Israel.

The Mondoweiss account says attacks followed after Hamawy was accused of having a close relationship with Omar Abdel Rahman, “better known as the Blind Sheikh,” after Hamawy accompanied the cleric on a road trip from New Jersey to Michigan.

Mondoweiss adds that Hamawy was called as a defense witness to refute testimony from the federal government’s main witness, Emad Salem, described as an FBI informant who was paid $1 million by the U.S. government and admitted to lying under oath.

Hamawy testified that he never heard Abdel Rahman say that, and Mondoweiss quotes him saying, “Any Muslim is going to be called a terrorist at some point, and these tropes are outdated and worn,” as he dismissed the criticisms as bad faith.

Mondoweiss frames the Hamawy result as part of a broader U.S. political shift, citing a May 2026 NBC News poll showing that 67 percent of Democrats sympathize more with Palestinians than Israelis and only 13 percent have a positive view of Israel.

The same source says that in February, “articles in The New Yorker revealed that Psy-Group, an Israeli private intelligence company now defunct, had been paid to spy on American students and activists engaged in BDS.”

France Palestine Solidarité also says the year began with attacks against Ilhan Omar, a member of the U.S. Congress who “has spoken out against the influence of the Israeli lobby on American policy,” and it adds that Omar introduced in July a resolution defending the right to boycott and explicitly offered her support for BDS.

The source quotes Omar’s stance as reflecting “the fierce determination of activists worldwide to intensify their involvement,” while also asserting that Israeli lobbies and the Israeli government pressured Justin Trudeau’s government to appeal a Canadian Federal Court decision about settlement goods bearing the label “Made in Israel.”
