Implementation Challenges
The rollout of the EES has been plagued by technical issues and long queues.
The European Commission granted flexibilities allowing suspensions of EES checks until September 2026.
At the port of Dover, big changes were made including reclaiming land to create additional processing areas.
Eurostar installed 49 EES kiosks at London St Pancras, but checks were still manual.
Travelers' Experience
Travelers must register biometric information on their first encounter with the system.

The registration is valid for three years.
The Travel to Europe app allows pre-registration up to 72 hours before arrival.
Wait times are expected to increase significantly in the initial phase.
EES will operate alongside ETIAS, slated to launch later in 2026.
Security and Enforcement
The system aims to strengthen external border security.
More than 27,000 refusals of entry have been recorded since the system began operating.

More than 700 individuals identified as potential security risks were denied entry.
The system automatically calculates the 90/180-day stay limit.
