Texas 23rd district campaign

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee does not currently list the district as an offensive target.

It is "closely monitoring the race," according to a person granted anonymity.

House Majority PAC spokesperson CJ Warnke said "nothing is off the table."

Katy Padilla Stout, the Democratic nominee, is now set to face Herrera in November.

Republicans pushed back: National Republican Congressional Committee spokesperson Christian Martinez said, "Texas' 23rd District is deep red, and Democrats know it," arguing Democrats lack a credible recruit.

Local Democratic chair Kendall Scudder attacked Herrera's image and the GOP choice in blunt terms, saying, "Maybe I'm just an old-fashioned East Texas farm kid, but I tend to be anti-Nazi... So, you know, go ahead and nominate the adulterer, sexual predator, or nominate the actual Nazi. Regardless, we outvoted them, and we're going to do it again in November."

Padilla Stout also said many Republicans contacted her after Gonzales' exit offering help, telling her, "We're ready, give me a sign. Where do I sign up?"

Key Takeaways

  • Gonzales left the race in Texas.
  • Brandon Herrera has a controversial online presence and hardline politics.
  • House Democrats view the vacancy as an opportunity to flip a deep-red district.
