The BBC reported that Héctor Bello wrote on Instagram that “his precious love”, named as Andrea, saved the life of their toddler during the two powerful quakes.

The Star said acting President Delcy Rodríguez put the death toll at 920, with 3,360 injured, as international rescue teams joined the search in Caracas and the state of La Guaira.

The Star also quoted a doctor in La Guaira saying the two main hospitals in the state are “completely overwhelmed”, with a “critical lack” of medical supplies.

Bello’s words and hospital strain

Héctor Bello wrote that “you gave your own life for our daughter” in the quakes, and The Star said people in Caracas could be heard calling for help from under debris of collapsed buildings.

In a separate post, Bello said, “How do I explain to your daughter that you lost your life to save hers, and that I wasn’t there in that moment to do anything?,” as quoted by The Star.

The BBC said Bello traveled to Caracas where his daughter was in the hospital, and he wrote: “My daughter and her aunt are doing well, they won't be discharged today - they're staying at the hospital.”

The BBC also reported that rescuers were continuing to search through rubble after twin quakes near the capital Caracas killed at least 920 people and injured more than 3,000.

The Star added that local teams searched through the night in collapsed buildings in Caracas and La Guaira, and it said a woman was pulled alive from rubble earlier.

International response and other deaths

As the death toll rose, The Star said international rescue teams included 80 Swiss rescuers and a team of Mexican aid workers, while it described local searches continuing in Caracas and La Guaira.
