He said, "There are many rumors, but we must wait for the Assembly of Experts to convene to vote on the selection of the new Supreme Leader."

The article notes the Assembly of Experts is made up of 88 senior clerics elected by Iranian voters and is responsible for selecting the Supreme Leader.
Araghchi said the interim Leadership Council is responsible until the Assembly convenes and that all Iranian institutions continue to carry out their duties.
The article adds that some observers believe a new leader cannot be appointed until the Assembly meets in person.
Response to Trump's remark
Araghchi directly responded to a question about U.S. President Donald Trump's remark that he should have a say in selecting Iran's new leadership.
He said, "We do not allow anyone to interfere in our internal affairs; this matter is left to the Iranian people alone."

He added that Iran will not accept Trump's demand for unconditional surrender.
Araghchi on ceasefire and strikes
Araghchi said Iran agreed to a ceasefire in June of last year but insisted any settlement this time must deliver a permanent end to the war.

He said, "No one wants this war to continue," and that Iran will continue its work in defending itself.
He affirmed that Iran does not attack its neighbors, but rather targets American facilities and sites in the Arab Gulf countries.
