Israel Detains Dr Hussam Abu Safiya After Storming Kamal Adwan Hospital

Le Dr Hussam Abou Safiya, 52 ans, is described by Le Soir as a symbol of the suffering of Gazaouis after being imprisoned by Israel since 27 décembre 2024, following the storming of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza.

Agence Media Palestine says Israeli troops abducted Abu Safiya on December 27, 2024 after storming Kamal Adwan Hospital and forcing its evacuation, rendering the medical facility unusable.

The same Agence Media Palestine report says Israel has detained him under its so-called 'Law on Illegal Combatants,' which authorizes unlimited detention without charges and denies detainees access to the evidence held against them.

It adds that a Beersheba court extended Abu Safiya's detention by six months in March 2025 and again in October 2025, keeping him imprisoned without any charges having ever been brought against him.

Al-Jazeera Net reports that Abu Safiya voluntarily surrendered to Israeli soldiers in December 2024 in an attempt to prevent them from storming the hospital, and that his son Elias said his father is living in conditions of deliberate starvation and denial of medical care.

Agence Media Palestine says human rights organizations are calling for Abu Safiya's release, and that they say he was subjected to torture and degrading treatment while detained without charges.

It reports that in July, lawyer Ghaid Ghanem Qassem revealed that Safiya had lost more than a third of his body weight in detention at Ofer Prison, that he was brutally beaten, and that repeated requests for medical care were denied.

Al-Jazeera Net says that after international pressure, occupation authorities allowed Abu Safiya to meet his lawyer after 90 days of being denied visitation, according to his son.

It also says Abu Safiya's family follows his news through his lawyer Nasser Awda, and that their situation is "is no different from the plight of the families of other prisoners held in the occupation's prisons."

Le Soir frames Abu Safiya as having been "maltraité, torturé et affamé" in detention, and it places him at Kamal Adwan Hospital in the north of Gaza on 17 septembre 2024.

Agence Media Palestine says the Palestine Forum in Britain launched the 'Red Ribbon Campaign' to demand the release of Abu Safiya, as well as all Palestinians detained in Israeli prisons, and it adds that activists organized a vigil in London on Saturday.

It states that the campaign says Israel currently detains more than 9,100 Palestinians, including more than 450 women and children, many of whom are held without charges or trial.

The report also says Abu Safiya refused to leave Kamal Adwan Hospital despite repeated Israeli attacks, choosing to stay with the patients and medical staff, before Israeli forces surrounded the hospital and expelled all those who were there.

Al-Jazeera Net says Abu Safiya's son Elias described his father's arrest and mistreatment as having happened "except for trying to save children," and it says Doctors for Human Rights confirmed that Abu Safiya and 375 medical staff detained by Israel "have faced no charges to date."

Al-Jazeera Net further recounts that on October 26, 2024, Israeli bombardments killed Ibrahim, the doctor's 20-year-old brother, inside the hospital, and it says Abu Safiya himself was later injured during repeated attacks on the facility.
