Beirut strike after truce
Israel struck Beirut’s southern suburbs after a US-brokered truce, hitting two apartment buildings in the Dahieh district and killing two people while injuring at least 20, Lebanon’s health ministry said.
BBC reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel had struck "terrorist headquarters in the Dahieh district of Beirut, in response to Hezbollah's firing at Israeli territory".
The BBC also said the attack came days after a truce brokered by the US last week and that Iran fired missiles at Israel on Sunday night, described as a response to Israel’s increasing attacks in southern Lebanon and Beirut’s suburbs.
Hezbollah later said it fired rockets at Isreali artillery positions at Yiftah Barracks and at troops near al-Marj Pond, describing the barrages as a response to Israel’s "violation of the ceasefire and the attacks on villages in southern Lebanon".
Al Jazeera said the Israeli strikes targeted two apartments in two buildings in the densely populated Dahiyeh neighborhood, with Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reporting at least two killed and 11 wounded.
Retaliation threats and talks
Iran’s parliament’s foreign policy and national security committee spokesperson Ebrahim Rezaei promised a "decisive and painful response" to the Israeli attack on Beirut, as the BBC described crowds rushing to assist the wounded.
In the same BBC account, an Israeli army Arabic-language spokesman posted on X that "Hezbollah terrorist infrastructure" was being targeted and wrote "To be continued," suggesting further strikes were coming.

The Guardian framed the escalation as Iran launching missiles at Israel in response to Israeli strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs, calling it the most serious escalation since April after 100 days of war.
The Guardian also reported that Trump called Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu urging him "not to strike back", adding he was "not happy about it" and that it would "not help" negotiations with Tehran.
Al Jazeera reported that after the Beirut attack, Iran’s top negotiator and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Tehran would “not only halt the path of negotiations”, but also come “in direct confrontation with the enemy” over violation of agreements regarding Lebanon.
What’s at stake next
The BBC said a ceasefire has been in force since 17 April - in name only - as it has been violated repeatedly by both sides, and that Sunday’s attack marked the third strike on the capital since the ceasefire went into effect.
It added that Lebanon’s Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri rejected the US-brokered deal, calling it "a trap" because it makes no mention of a parallel Israeli withdrawal from occupied territory in the southern part of the country.
Al Jazeera said a further conditional ceasefire announced by Lebanese and Israeli envoys last week in Washington was rejected by Hezbollah because it did not include the group or provide for the Israeli army’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon.
The Guardian reported that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said “Waves of missiles and drones will continue to be launched around the clock for the next seven days until the enemy is deterred and ceases its crimes.”
Al Jazeera also said Israeli attacks have killed more than 3,500 people in Lebanon since March 2, while Hezbollah has attacked Israel after March 2 and the violence has continued despite the April 17 ceasefire.
