IDF targets Hamas security

The Israeli army said it killed several senior officials of Hamas's internal security apparatus in an overnight strike in northern Gaza, with a joint statement by the army and the Shin Bet naming Hassan Rabah Hassan Labad as the deputy head of Hamas' General Security Service.

The Israeli army and the Shin Bet internal security service said yesterday, Thursday, that they targeted a number of senior Hamas General Security Service officials in the Gaza Strip, after an airstrike carried out last night in the northern part of the Strip, while 11 Palestinians were martyred and dozens injured since dawn on Thursday

The statement also named Asim Shubair, Abdullaha Abu Kloub and Mohammed Abu Mark among those killed, and Israel said the men were senior officials who played influential roles in shaping Hamas decision-making.

The Times of Israel reported that the Israeli Air Force and Israeli Navy carried out strikes in the Gaza Strip overnight into Thursday, killing top commanders in Hamas’s general security mechanism, and said at least nine Palestinians were killed in strikes on four apartments early on Thursday.

The Times of Israel added that Hassan Labad, along with senior officials Asem Shabir, Abdullah Abu Kaloub, and Mohammed Abu Marek, were killed, and said medics reported four apartments were hit, including the family’s home, before dawn.

Anadolu Ajansı reported that there was no immediate comment from Hamas on the Israeli statement, while it also cited Palestinian figures saying Israel’s war in Gaza since October 2023 has killed nearly 73,000 Palestinians and injured more than 173,000.

Claims, deaths, and no comment

The Israeli military said the senior officials of the general security mechanism were eliminated to remove a threat, after they were recently involved in attempts to rebuild the Hamas terror organization and assisted the organization’s senior leadership in advancing terror activity against the State of Israel and IDF troops.

The Times of Israel described the security mechanism as a clandestine Hamas body responsible for security for top Hamas officials, communications between them, coordinating their meetings, and transporting them between emergency sites.

Anadolu Ajansı said there was no immediate comment from Hamas on the Israeli statement, and it reported that Israeli authorities claimed the men were senior officials within the security apparatus and played influential roles in shaping its decisions.

In Gaza, The Times of Israel said Gaza health officials reported five members of the same family were among the dead, and that medics said four apartments were hit, including the family’s home, before dawn.

The Jerusalem Post also framed the strikes as removing an immediate threat, quoting the IDF that "The senior members of the General Security Apparatus were eliminated in order to remove an immediate threat" after recently engaging in efforts to rebuild Hamas and assist its leadership in advancing terrorist activity against the State of Israel and IDF troops.

Ceasefire toll and wider stakes

The Times of Israel said the fatalities were the latest in the coastal enclave since an October ceasefire deal attempted to halt a more than two-year war between Israel and the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas in Gaza.

It reported that some 930 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes since the truce began, according to figures from Gaza health officials, who do not distinguish between combatants and civilians.

Anadolu Ajansı likewise cited a ceasefire that took effect on Oct. 10, 2025, and said the Israeli army has killed 936 Palestinians and injured 2,903 in near-daily attacks, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

Beyond the immediate strikes, The Times of Israel reported that at least 11 international activists attempting to bring attention to Israel’s blockade of Gaza have been detained in Libya for more than a week while trying to reach the territory by land, according to the Global Sumud Flotilla.

The Times of Israel also said more than 200 health workers and activists have been attempting a separate route overland to reach Gaza, starting in Mauritania on May 15, and were heading towards Egypt to try to enter Gaza via the Rafah crossing.
