The strikes hit a school sheltering displaced people where Palestinians had clashed with an Israeli-backed militia.

The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital reported 10 dead and dozens injured, including six in critical condition.

The incident marked the deadliest strike in the US-brokered ceasefire that had largely halted fighting for almost six months.

Witnesses said the violence began when the Israel-backed militia set up a checkpoint and came under attack from Hamas security personnel.

Israeli drones intervened to support the militia, carrying out strikes on Hamas personnel.

It remained unclear how many of the dead were killed by airstrikes and how many died in the fighting.
