  • Ceasefire under strain as Israel and Hezbollah escalate attacks.

Strikes kill paramedics

Lebanon said Israeli air strikes in southern Lebanon killed at least 13 people, and on Tuesday afternoon Lebanon’s health ministry said two paramedics from the state-run Lebanese Civil Defense emergency service were killed and a third was injured in a strike on Nabatieh as they carried out a mission after an earlier attack killed one person.

The BBC reported that Lebanese President Joseph Aoun expressed "sadness and regret at the killing of two Civil Defence members" in Nabatieh, identifying them as Hussein Jaber and Ahmad Noura.

Lebanon’s health ministry accused Israeli forces of deliberately targeting the paramedics, saying "This targeting constitutes further evidence of the Israeli enemy's blatant violation of international humanitarian law".

State-run National News Agency (NNA) reporting also said a Syrian man was killed and his wife was wounded when an Israeli drone targeted a motorcycle they were riding on a road in the Tayr Debba area on Tuesday.

The BBC added that NNA reported a further three people were killed in an attack on Jabshit on Tuesday, while Hezbollah said it targeted Israeli troops in Naqoura, Bayada and Houla with drones and a soldier in Kibbutz Manara.

Ceasefire strain and warnings

The BBC said a ceasefire has failed to stop the war between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah, and it reported that Israeli and Lebanese officials are expected to meet again in Washington on Thursday to try to find a way to end the war.

Al Jazeera framed the situation as a ceasefire under strain, saying the ceasefire that started on April 16 is increasingly coming under strain as "both Israel and Hezbollah ramping up attacks against each other."

Al Jazeera also quoted the Lebanese Health Ministry accusing Israeli forces of targeting paramedics, saying the ministry warned that "the Israeli enemy continues to violate international laws and humanitarian norms".

In parallel, Naharnet reported that Israeli strikes on a town in southern Lebanon killed six people and wounded seven others in Kfardounine, and it said the NNA reported the wounded were transported to hospitals in the coastal city of Tyre.

Naharnet added that the Israeli army later ordered the residents of Arzoun, Tayrdebba, Bazourieh and al-Hosh to evacuate ahead of imminent strikes, while it described fighting continuing despite an April 17 ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon.

Deaths, displacement, and risk

The BBC reported that Lebanon’s health ministry said 108 emergency medical services and healthcare workers had been killed in Lebanon during the war, with more than 140 Israeli attacks recorded on ambulances and medical facilities.

Gulf News said the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health reported that Israeli attacks since 2 March have killed at least 2,846 people and injured 8,693 others, and it added that 552 deaths and 1,149 injuries were recorded after the ceasefire took effect on April 16.

Gulf News also reported earlier figures released by the ministry that said 511 deaths and more than 1,100 wounded since the truce began, while it described smoke rising over border villages after incendiary munitions struck the southern Lebanese village of Yohmor.

The Guardian described forced evacuation orders for more than 100 villages close to the Lebanese-Israeli border and said Israel ordered roughly 14.3% of Lebanon’s territory to be vacated, displacing more than 1.2 million people from their homes.

The Guardian further warned that despite the Lebanon-Israel ceasefire, Israel continues to carry out strikes across Lebanon and Hezbollah has continued to attack Israeli soldiers there, while it said the areas under the “yellow line” comprise about 608 sq km, or approximately 6% of Lebanese territory, under Israeli occupation.
