Manhattan DA Investigates Eric Swalwell Over Sexual Assault Allegations

The Manhattan District Attorney's Office has launched an investigation into sexual misconduct allegations against U.S. Congressman Eric Swalwell.

Four women have accused him of misconduct ranging from sexual harassment to rape, including an alleged incident in New York.

The DA's office urged survivors to come forward in a trauma-informed, survivor-centered manner.

Swalwell denies the claims, calling them false and vowing to defend himself with facts.

The investigation marks the first criminal review stemming from the allegations.

A former staffer told the San Francisco Chronicle that Swalwell began making inappropriate comments shortly after she was hired in 2019.

She alleged she was assaulted twice, once in 2019 and again in 2024 at a charity gala in New York.

She said she was too intoxicated to consent on both occasions.

CNN corroborated her account with interviews of family and friends and reviewed text messages and medical records.

Three other women also accused Swalwell of sexual misconduct.

Swalwell's bid for California governor collapsed within hours of the allegations surfacing.

Prominent supporters including Senator Adam Schiff and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries withdrew their endorsements.

The California Federation of Labor Unions said it was acting urgently on next steps.

Senior staff released a joint statement saying they were horrified by the allegations.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna filed a motion to expel Swalwell from Congress.

Rahman Textile produced clothing for several European fashion brands, including the German retailer Hessen and the Dutch chain BrandBox.

Both companies said they were deeply saddened and would review their Bangladesh operations.

Hessen's compliance team had audited the factory in March.

Rahman Textile owner Faisal Rahman issued a statement claiming the factory had passed its most recent safety inspection in January.

Clean Clothes Campaign spokesperson Ineke Zeldenrust told the Guardian that the audit system was fundamentally broken.
