The attack took place in July 2024, and the court heard that Amaaz head-butted a member of the public and threw 10 punches, two elbow strikes and one kick at responding police officers, including PC Lydia Ward and PC Ellie Cook.

PC Ward told the court she was knocked to the ground with one punch, with so much force you broke my nose, and she said she was “terrified” during the assault.

PC Cook said she was left “traumatised” and that she was “terrified” and suffered “excruciating” pain during the incident.

The Crown Prosecution Service said it would not seek a third trial over a separate allegation involving firearms officer PC Zachary Marsden, after two juries could not make a decision.

Victim Statements and CPS

In a victim impact statement read at Liverpool Crown Court, PC Ward said, “What angers me is that afterwards, when only part of the footage was out in the public, you played the victim,” and she added, “You are not a victim. I am the one who was injured, not you.”

PC Cook told the court she was left “terrified” and said, “It hurts and upsets me that you chose to spin the narrative the way you did,” describing how she had to move out of “a home where I felt safe and secure.”

The ITVX account said Amaaz was eventually felled by a Taser, while it also described Judge Flewitt criticising the “total lack of remorse” shown by Amaaz.

GB News said the sentencing took place at Liverpool Crown Court and quoted PC Ward saying, “What you did was cowardly,” after Amaaz was convicted of assaulting PC Lydia Ward and PC Ellie Cook.

The Independent reported that PC Ward delivered her victim personal statement at Liverpool Crown Court on Friday, addressing Amaaz via videolink from prison where he had been on remand for 11 months.

Online Abuse and Ongoing Scrutiny

The Guardian reported that mobile phone footage of the brawl was shared widely on social media, and it said a CCTV clip leaked days later showed an altercation beforehand with three police officers.

While Manchester Airport is usually lulled by the sound of suitcases and airplanes, the mood was very different on Tuesday, July 23

Chief Constable Sir Stephen Watson QPM said officers were met with “online vilification, condemnation and adverse commentary” following the incident, and he said the criminal trial was now concluded while the IOPC investigation into the conduct of officers remained ongoing.

ITVX said Judge Flewitt accepted that Amaaz and his family had been victims of significant online abuse, but the judge said he “cannot help but wonder” whether it was linked to Amaaz’s decision to go public with mobile phone footage “without any reference to what had gone before.”

The Independent said Amaaz was convicted last year of assaulting Pc Lydia Ward, causing actual bodily harm, and it said prosecutors stated Amaaz resisted attempts to remove him, using a “high level of violence”.

GB News added that the CPS confirmed it would not pursue another trail against Amaaz and his brother, Muhammad Amaad, 26, who faced a single count of assaulting PC Marsden, and it said the Rochdale defendants were subsequently acquitted after they argued they acted in lawful self-defence or defence of each other.
