Russia Launches Missile And Drone Attacks On Ukraine During Trump-Brokered Ceasefire

Ukraine and Russia traded accusations of violating a three-day ceasefire brokered by US President Donald Trump, even as both sides reported civilian casualties on Sunday, the second day of the truce.

The Express Tribune said Russian strikes on eastern Ukraine injured at least nine people, while Ukrainian strikes on Russia’s Belgorod border region injured four others, and it also cited Russian drone strikes in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region injuring a three-year-old girl and a 23-year-old rescue worker.

In the same account, Russian strikes on the southern Kherson region injured four people, including a 19-year-old and a 53-year-old city council worker, while the governor of the neighbouring Mykolaiv region reported two injured in a drone attack on a civilian car.

The Moscow Times likewise reported that Russian attacks wounded at least nine people in Ukraine on Sunday, and it said Ukrainian officials reported casualties despite a decrease in long-range Russian drone strikes shown by Ukrainian air force data.

The Express Tribune also quoted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky saying in his evening address, "On the front line, the Russian army is not complying with the ceasefire and is not even really trying to."

As the ceasefire entered its second day, the Ukrainian General Staff said, "Since the beginning of the day, the number of attacks by the aggressor has reached 51," while the Russian defence ministry claimed Ukrainian forces violated the truce with drone and artillery attacks.

News18 reported that the Ukrainian General Staff said at least 51 attacks have taken place since the day of the ceasefire announcement, and it added that the Ukrainian air force said Russia launched just 44 drones from 6:00 pm on Friday, calling it "one of the lowest numbers in months."

News18 also said Russian drones killed two civilians and wounded three in Ukraine’s central-eastern Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions, and it cited governor Vyacheslav Gladkov saying three people were wounded by Ukrainian drone strikes in Russia’s western Belgorod region.

The Express Tribune, meanwhile, said the Russian defence ministry accused Ukraine of "16,071 ceasefire violations" over a 24-hour period, including thousands of drone strikes.

In his evening address, Zelensky told South China Morning Post that Russia’s actions on the front line were not limited to the truce period, adding, "Russian attacks wounded at least nine people in eastern Ukraine on Sunday."

Beyond the immediate battlefield reporting, the ceasefire’s political framing remained contested, with Trump’s announcement of a three-day pause tied to a prisoner exchange of 1,000 prisoners each and the truce running from Saturday through Monday.

The Express Tribune said Trump announced the ceasefire on Friday and that it was supposed to last three days starting Saturday, and it reported that it was not clear on Sunday when the prisoner exchange would materialise.

France 24 reported that Vladimir Putin asserted at a press conference that the war was "heading to an end" despite ceasefire violations, and it also said Putin told soldiers at the scaled-down parade in Moscow that they were fighting an "aggressive force" in Ukraine.

RBC-Ukraine said Russia attacked Ukraine on the night of May 9 with an Iskander-M ballistic missile and 43 strike drones, and it stated that as of 8 a.m. Kyiv time Ukrainian air defense forces shot down or neutralized 34 Russian Shahed, Gerbera, Italmas, and Parodya decoy drones.

With the truce under strain, the Express Tribune reported Zelensky’s demand for compliance on the front line, while France 24 said the Kremlin said there were no plans to prolong the truce beyond its three-day deadline.
