He is currently a Year 10 and smaller than most players around him, yet still stands out.

Gabriel starred in United's 3-2 FA Youth Cup win over Sunderland before 2,516 fans at Old Trafford.

The victory earned United an Old Trafford semi-final with Crystal Palace, who they would also face in the Premier League Under-18 Cup final at Selhurst Park next month.

United rolled out the red carpet last summer when technical director Jason Wilcox spoke to Gabriel to persuade him to stay in the north-west.

Ruben Amorim was the first to call him into the senior training squad, though his response was lukewarm.

Michael Carrick was also asked about him this week.

"I couldn't speak highly enough of JJ," said Darren Fletcher in January, praising his work ethic and talent.

Fletcher highlighted his amazing family and support around him and noted there has been a lot of noise around him because he is a talented kid.

When the 2026-27 season begins on 22 August, Gabriel will be 15 years and 320 days.

Next season's EFL Cup entry would be before his 16th birthday, even if United do not enter until the third round as a European qualifier.
