Trump-Xi Summit Looms
U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are scheduled to meet in Beijing on 14–15 May 2026 for a high-stakes summit aimed at managing rising tensions over trade, technology, Taiwan and the Iran conflict.
AnewZ frames the talks as a “risk management summit” rather than a “friendship summit,” with Alejandro Reyes, an adjunct professor at the University of Hong Kong, saying the underlying message is to prevent deterioration while avoiding overpromising outcomes.
Euronews reports that as Trump arrives in Beijing on Wednesday for the summit, he will be accompanied by top U.S. executives, with Jensen Huang of Nvidia joining the presidential entourage at the last minute.
Euronews adds that the Trump administration has maintained strict limits on the sale of H200 AI chips to China, requiring rigorous third-party verification before any shipments can take place.
In Beijing, the summit is also expected to address the Iran conflict, with the U.S. urging China to play a more active role in encouraging stability and ensuring the continued flow of global energy through key maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.
Trade Talks in Seoul
Before the leaders’ summit, the U.S. and China began fresh trade talks in South Korea, with Chinese and U.S. delegations convening at Incheon International Airport, according to Xinhua.
The talks were led by Chinese Vice-Premier He Lifeng and U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and The Economic Times says the delegations arrived at Incheon Airport around noon local time and met South Korean President Lee Jae Myung earlier in the day.

The Straits Times reports that INCHEON, South Korea, May 13 - U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent arrived in South Korea on Wednesday to hold trade talks with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng ahead of a summit later this week in Beijing.
South China Morning Post says the two delegations concluded the seventh round of negotiations in Seoul’s Incheon Airport after less than four hours on Wednesday, describing it as the briefest session since the two countries began holding talks last year.
Asia News Network adds that Bessent planned to visit South Korea this week for talks with He Lifeng, and Bessent wrote on X that “On Wednesday, I will stop in Seoul for a discussion with Vice Premier He Lifeng of China, before continuing on to Beijing” for the leaders’ summit.
AI Chips, Taiwan, and Stakes
Euronews says the delegation’s composition underscores how AI chip exports and advanced technology trade are likely to be central, noting that the Trump administration has maintained strict limits on the sale of H200 AI chips to China.
“How the Trump-Xi summit could set superpower relations for many years to come Security around Beijing's historic Tiananmen Square has been heightened for days, with rumours on social media swirling of a special parade or some big, choreographed event”
AnewZ reports that the United States continues to restrict exports of advanced semiconductors and chip-making equipment to China, while Beijing has raised objections and is seeking an easing of those restrictions.
BBC reports that security around Beijing's historic Tiananmen Square has been heightened for days, and it describes the visit as including talks, a banquet, and a visit to the Temple of Heaven.
BBC also quotes Secretary of State Marco Rubio saying, “I hope the Chinese tell him what he needs to be told,” adding that “what you are doing in the Strait is causing you to be globally isolated. You're the bad guy in this.”
For Taiwan, BBC says Trump downplayed the U.S. willingness to defend Taiwan, with Trump saying of Xi, “He considers it to be a part of China,” and “that's up to him, what he's going to be doing.”
