The United States and Iran failed to reach a peace agreement after 21 hours of direct negotiations in Islamabad.

Vice President JD Vance said the bad news was that no agreement was reached, and that the sticking point remained Iran's refusal to commit to not developing nuclear weapons.

Vance said Washington needed an affirmative commitment that Iran would not seek to develop nuclear weapons and would not seek the tools to build them quickly.

The talks were mediated by Pakistan and involved high-level delegations including Iran's Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.

Trump framed the failure as Iran being unwilling to give up its nuclear ambitions and predicted they would come back and give the U.S. everything it wants.

President Trump announced the U.S. would impose a naval blockade on the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump wrote that the U.S. Navy would begin blockading any and all ships trying to enter or leave the strait.

The move came after Iran effectively held the strait hostage, imposing a toll and limiting oil exports.

Trump said Iran promised to open the strait and knowingly failed to do so.

The UK will not be involved in any blockade of the strait, despite Trump's claims.

Iran responded defiantly to Trump's blockade threat.

Iran's chief negotiator said Trump’s new threats would have no effect on the Iranian nation.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Naval Forces warned that any military vessels approaching the Strait of Hormuz would be considered to be violating the ceasefire.

The blockade came as the two-week ceasefire was set to expire.

Omani Foreign Minister called for an extension to the ceasefire.

The failure of negotiations unleashed starkly partisan political responses in the U.S.

The UK government clarified it would not participate in any blockade.

Oil prices rose as the blockade threatened to disrupt a global market.
