Wordle in German can be played online for free now, with a new five-letter solution word each day and six attempts to guess it.

In each row, you must enter a meaningful word – an arbitrary sequence of letters is not allowed.

You enter letters via the virtual keyboard under the game or a connected PC keyboard, and when a row is full you confirm your attempt with the Enter key.

After each attempt there are color hints: turquoise indicates a correctly placed letter (the letter can occur twice), orange indicates a letter occurs in the word but in the wrong position (it can occur twice), and gray indicates the letter does not occur in the word.

The game also forbids names, brands, places, and plural forms.

Wordle went live in October 2021 as a web application and, according to its developer, Josh Wardle, had just 90 users on November 1, 2021.

Two months later it was already 300,000 and shortly thereafter the number of Wordle players surpassed the million mark.

In January 2022 The New York Times Company bought the game for an undisclosed seven-figure sum.

Since February 2022 it has been available on the NYT website and now also in a German version at WELT — every day a current puzzle.

The German edition at WELT continues Wordle's availability as a daily puzzle tied to the NYT-era rollout.

This brings the cult game's daily challenge to German readers.
