El Obeid under pressure

A coalition of 46 Sudanese, regional, and international organizations issued an urgent humanitarian appeal warning that Sudan is on the brink of a new wave of catastrophe, demanding an immediate, comprehensive, and unconditional truce nationwide.

Escalating RSF drone strikes on El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state, are killing civilians, cutting off access to food, water, and fuel, and paving the way for a ground offensive that would put hundreds of thousands of people at grave risk, triggering a major humanitarian emergency, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is warning today

The statement said Al-Ubayyid, the capital of North Kordofan, faces unprecedented risks due to heavy military mobilization by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) around the city, countered by intensive deployment of the Sudanese Armed Forces inside.

It added that the city has already been targeted by drone strikes hitting power and fuel stations, cutting off essential services and worsening shortages of food, medicine, and water.

In parallel, the International Rescue Committee warned that escalating RSF drone strikes on El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state, are killing civilians, cutting off access to food, water, and fuel, and paving the way for a ground offensive that would put hundreds of thousands of people at grave risk.

Warnings and drone attacks

Members of the UN Security Council expressed concern over the imminent risk of mass atrocities in El-Obeid, voicing concern at reports of a large-scale mobilization of military forces by the Rapid Support Forces around the city and the risk of a potential ground attack.

In that statement, the Security Council members urged the Rapid Support Forces to halt their assault on El-Obeid immediately and called on all parties to stop fighting immediately while protecting civilians.

The East reported that field sources said the Rapid Support Forces launched, on Monday night, an intensive drone attack on the city of El Obeid targeting residential and service facilities inside the city, with the bombardment hitting several residential neighborhoods and service facilities and triggering panic among residents.

The East also said the sources indicated that targeting water stations in North Kordofan on Monday worsened the city's drinking-water crisis, causing a sharp shortage of potable water, while no official toll on human or material losses had yet been released.

Humanitarian stakes and risks

The International Rescue Committee warned that civilians risk being trapped in El Obeid if key evacuation routes towards Kosti are blocked, and said the advances around El Obeid reflect patterns seen in El Fasher where encirclement was followed by widespread attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure.

IRC said that when water stops running and fuel runs out, people cannot survive, and when roads are intentionally blocked, people cannot escape, leaving them without any protection.

It added that an attack on El Obeid could trigger a large-scale movement of displaced people toward White Nile state, where numbers of internally displaced people are already increasing, and said that almost 2000 people have already fled to White Nile from El Obeid in recent weeks.

The coalition’s appeal similarly demanded an immediate halt to hostilities and the protection of vital infrastructure, including hospitals, displacement centers, and water plants, to ensure the unhindered flow of aid.
