The IDF confirmed the drone was launched by Hezbollah and said the incident constitutes "a blatant violation" of the ceasefire understandings between Israel and the Iran-backed group.

The strike came shortly after the IDF said it had begun striking Hezbollah terror infrastructure sites in several areas in southern Lebanon, and earlier on Thursday IDF Arabic-language spokesperson Avichay Adraee issued an urgent evacuation warning to residents of several Lebanese towns including Labaya, Sahmar, Taffahata, Kafr Malek, Yahmor in the Bekaa, Ain Tineh, Houmin al-Fouqa, and Mazra’at Sinai.

As Israel and Hezbollah continued to trade blows despite a US-backed truce announced last month that is set to expire on Sunday, a senior Lebanese official said Beirut would demand that Israel halt its fire as a third round of Israel-Lebanon talks is set to open in Washington on Thursday.

In parallel, the IDF said it is set to establish a factory that will produce first-person view (FPV) "suicide" drones and employ approximately 200 haredi (ultra-Orthodox) soldiers, according to a Tuesday report.

Hospitals and soldiers’ accounts

Over the past two weeks, 17 people wounded in Hezbollah drone explosions were brought to Rambam Medical Center, including 11 by helicopter, and 15 soldiers were hospitalized there with five wounded by explosive drones.

One soldier who came to visit a wounded friend said, “We move with protective gear, vests and helmets, but you don’t know when it will hit you,” while a friend of one wounded soldier said, “The forces there are completely exposed.”

Haaretz.com’s report on touring south Lebanon said soldiers described netting as offering “no guarantee of protection against drones,” and it said drones had claimed the lives of four soldiers.

Dr. Gil Sviri, head of neurosurgery at Rambam, said, “FPV drones hit forces exposed in the field,” and Dr. Hani Bahous, head of emergency medicine and trauma at Rambam, said many injuries were caused by shrapnel of varying sizes.

Defense officials told Israeli media that more than 100 proposals had already been examined and that combat teams in southern Lebanon were expected to receive new drone-detection kits, with security officials saying the systems would not provide full protection but could give soldiers several crucial seconds to take cover.

Escalation and wider impact

Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon killed 22 people, including eight children, the country’s health ministry said, with eight deaths reported when drones targeted three vehicles on the coastal highway in the Barja, Jiyeh and Saadiyat areas.

The BBC also reported later updates that Israeli strikes killed six people in the village of Arab Salim, three people in Roumine, and one person in Harouf, while Hezbollah said its fighters attacked Israeli troops operating in several areas in southern Lebanon with attack drones, rockets and explosive devices.

In a letter released on Tuesday, Hezbollah’s leader Naim Qassem dismissed efforts to stop the fighting and said his group would "not abandon the battlefield".

An Anadolu Ajansı report said Israel approved an emergency plan of 2 billion shekels ($687.7 million) to accelerate development of advanced anti-drone technologies, including fixed radar systems along the northern border and two new defense systems intended to directly shield combat forces from drone attacks.

The same Anadolu Ajansı report said that since March 2, Israeli attacks in Lebanon have killed more than 2,840 people, injured over 8,690 and displaced more than 1.6 million, about one-fifth of the population, according to Lebanese officials.
