Geo News said Naqvi arrived in Tehran on Saturday to “facilitate” peace talks between Iran and the United States that had stalled despite a fragile ceasefire.

The Geo News account also linked the visit to Pakistan’s mediation efforts after a ceasefire announced on April 9 largely halted fighting that erupted when U.S. and Israeli forces attacked Iran on February 28.

Officials trade messages

In Tehran, the two interior ministers exchanged views on regional peace and the evolving situation in the wider region, with Geo News reporting that they explored possible steps toward revival of peace talks between Tehran and Washington.

Geo News quoted Iran’s chief negotiator and speaker of parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, saying, "There is no alternative but to accept the rights of the Iranian people as laid out in the 14-point proposal."

The Express Tribune described the same meeting as a reaffirmation of stability efforts, saying Naqvi and his Iranian counterpart Eskandar Momeni “reaffirmed their commitment to deepening interactions to address shared regional challenges.”

The Express Tribune also placed the diplomacy in the context of Pakistan’s mediation after months of conflict and failed negotiations, noting that Pakistan had brokered a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran on April 8 and then hosted talks in Islamabad on April 11 and 12.

What’s at stake next

Beyond the immediate push to resume talks, the sources tied the diplomacy to broader regional pressure points, including Iran’s control of the Strait of Hormuz and the impact on shipping and markets.

RFI reported that since the start of the war with the United States and Israel on February 28, Iran has largely blocked shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, while the United States has also blockaded Iranian ports to pressure Iran.

RFI added that Ibrahim Azizi, head of Iran's National Security Committee, said Tehran had prepared a mechanism to manage traffic through the Strait of Hormuz along a designated route, to be unveiled soon, and that a fee would be charged for specialized services.

In parallel, RFI said Iraq’s oil minister Bassam Mohammed Khazir stated that in April Iraq exported 10 million barrels through the Strait of Hormuz, after exporting 93 million barrels per month through Hormuz previously.
