Iran Fires Missiles at Israel After Warnings Over Lebanon Assault
Key Takeaways
- Missile barrage from Iran targeted northern Israel, triggering interceptions and nationwide air-raid sirens.
- First direct Iranian attack on Israel since the fragile April ceasefire.
- The strikes followed Tehran's warnings to halt Israeli operations in Lebanon, heightening mediation risk.
Missiles After Beirut
Iran launched a barrage of missiles toward Israel after warnings from Tehran that Israel must halt its ongoing assault on southern Lebanon or face more attacks, with multiple rounds of strikes targeting Israel starting at about 10pm local time (19:00 GMT) on Sunday.
“JERUSALEM -- Israel said Sunday that Iran has launched missiles at it in the first such bombardment since a fragile ceasefire took effect in early April, complicating mediation efforts for a deal to end the war”
The Israeli army said it “intercepted all missiles from Iran thus far,” while Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed it targeted Israel’s Ramat David airbase with ballistic missiles and called the attack a response to “the widespread killing and displacement of the oppressed people of the Tyre and Nabatieh regions.”

Iran’s military adviser to the supreme leader, Mohsen Rezaee, wrote on X that Iran “repeatedly stated that it will not tolerate violations of the ceasefire and aggression against Lebanon,” adding that “Tonight, the aggressors received their response.”
US President Donald Trump said he was going to call Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “right now” to tell him not to hit back at Iran, and he told Channel 12’s Barak Ravid that “The Iranian strikes didn’t hurt anybody.”
Competing Reactions
Israel’s military said it was working to intercept the missiles and that people could leave shelters but stay near them, while sirens sounded in several areas of the country and multiple explosions were heard in northern Israel.
Israel military spokesman Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin said, “Iran has made a grave mistake,” and the South China Morning Post reported that the Israeli military chief Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir vowed the military would “strike the enemy with force as soon as the green light is given.”

Trump told Fox News that the missile attacks are “certainly not going to help negotiations,” and Axios correspondent Barak Ravid reported on X that Trump stated he would call Netanyahu to urge him not to retaliate against Iran.
In a statement circulated by Iranian media, the IRGC said “Tonight’s operation was a warning,” and the IRGC added that if aggressions were repeated, “the responses will be broader in scope and will encompass all American and Zionist targets throughout the region.”
Ceasefire Stakes
The missile launches came after Iran’s warnings over Israel’s ongoing invasion of southern Lebanon, which has continued apace despite Israel and Lebanon agreeing to a ceasefire earlier this week in Washington, DC.
Iran’s parliamentary speaker and chief peace negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Tehran would “not only halt the path of negotiations,” but also come “in direct confrontation with the enemy” over violations of the ceasefire agreement, while CNBC reported that Ghalibaf said the U.S. “naval blockade and violation of agreements regarding Lebanon” amount to violations of the ceasefire.
The Media Line reported that the Home Front Command sent alerts to mobile phones in affected areas and instructed residents to enter protected spaces when warnings were received, and it said the attack was the first against Israel launched by Iran since the ceasefire began on April 8th.
In parallel, mediation efforts continued as Pakistan’s interior minister visited Iran and Egypt said its foreign minister and his Qatari counterpart discussed “proposed elements” of a potential agreement, with no details, while the Al Jazeera report said Israel’s latest wave of strikes on Dahiyeh killed at least two people and injured 11 more on Sunday afternoon.
