In a statement carried on Iranian media, Araghchi also claimed to have advised the UAE that Israel and the US “cannot guarantee their security,” adding that “we and the United Arab Emirates are neighbours” and must “understand security as mutual cooperation” between the two countries.

At the same time, Al Jazeera reported that Araghchi urged BRICS nations to condemn what he called “violations of international law by the United States and Israel,” as the war in the Middle East and a related fuel crisis dominated a two-day gathering in New Delhi.

BRICS unity strain

At the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi, Araghchi told the gathering that Iran was a “victim of illegal expansionism and warmongering” and urged BRICS+ nations to resist “Western hegemony and the sense of impunity that the US believes it is entitled to.”

Al Jazeera said Araghchi later told the gathering that the UAE was “directly involved in the aggression against my country,” citing the Iranian semi-official Mehr news agency.

The same Al Jazeera report said India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar opened the meeting by saying, “We meet at a time of considerable flux in international relations,” before closed meetings began.

Al Jazeera also quoted Iran’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi saying, “We want India’s BRICS chairship to be successful. It is not a good approach to send a signal to the world that the BRICS is divided,” after he said “one member country” pushed for language condemning Iran.

Separately, Middle East Eye said Abu Dhabi denied a “secret” meeting described by Israel, while Araghchi accused the UAE of involvement and said it refused to condemn the aggression when it began.

Hormuz and blockade

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told Press TV at the BRICS summit that the main obstacle in the Strait of Hormuz was the US blockade, and he said commercial ships needed to “cooperate” with Iran’s navy while the strait was “open to all commercial vessels.”

The Express Tribune reported that Chinese ships began transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday night under Iran’s “management protocol,” with Fars News Agency citing an informed source saying the vessels were allowed to cross after adhering to “the Iranian strait management protocol.”

The Express Tribune also included a US Central Command statement on X saying, “As of today, CENTCOM forces have redirected 70 commercial vessels and disabled 4 to ensure compliance,” to enforce President Donald Trump’s blockade on ships travelling to or from Iranian ports.

In a separate account, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty said Rubio told NBC News that the US and China agree the Strait of Hormuz should not be “militarized,” and it quoted Rubio saying, “The Chinese side said they are not in favor of militarizing the Strait of Hormuz.”

The same Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty report said since the beginning of the US-Israeli war with Iran on February 28, Tehran has effectively closed the key strait and charged tolls, while the US imposed a naval blockade on ships going to and from Iran.
