Israel Strikes Dahieh Beirut Suburbs, Killing Two as Iran Launches Missiles
Key Takeaways
- Israeli airstrikes in Dahieh Beirut killed two and injured multiple people.
- Strikes occurred during a fragile US-brokered ceasefire and were framed as retaliation for Hezbollah fire.
- Iran launched missiles at Israel in response, escalating the conflict and testing the ceasefire.
Beirut strike and missile exchange
Israel struck Beirut’s southern suburbs in the Dahieh district on Sunday, killing two people and injuring 20, according to Lebanon’s health ministry as cited by CBS News and described by the BBC as an attack on two apartment buildings.
“At least two people have been killed and 11 wounded in an Israeli air attack on a densely populated civilian neighbourhood in Beirut’s southern suburbs, according to Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA)”
The BBC reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel had struck "terrorist headquarters in the Dahieh district of Beirut, in response to Hezbollah's firing at Israeli territory," while Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency said the strikes targeted two apartments in two buildings.

After the Beirut strike, Iran launched missiles at Israel, with CBS News saying sirens sounded in several areas of the country and that Iran’s state broadcaster confirmed the launch of missiles and multiple explosions in northern Israel.
CBS News also reported that the U.S. military said it had shot down six Iranian one-way attack drones over the past two days headed toward the Strait of Hormuz, and that seven ballistic missiles fired at Kuwait and Bahrain early Saturday were largely intercepted.
The BBC framed the escalation as coming days after a U.S.-brokered truce, noting that the Sunday attack was the first on the Lebanese capital since the truce brokered by the U.S. last week.
Threats, negotiations, and competing tolls
Iran’s chief negotiator and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned that Tehran would “not only halt the path of negotiations” but also come “in direct confrontation with the enemy” after the Beirut strike, according to Al Jazeera.
Al Jazeera also quoted Ebrahim Rezaei, a lawmaker serving as spokesperson for the Iranian parliament’s national security committee, saying Iran would deliver a “decisive and painful response” to the attack.

In the same dispute over the ceasefire’s status, the BBC said Israel had limited its Beirut attacks under U.S. pressure over concerns strikes there could put a wider peace deal in jeopardy, while Al Jazeera reported that a further conditional ceasefire announced last week in Washington was rejected by Hezbollah.
The casualty figures also diverged across outlets, with Al Jazeera citing Lebanon’s NNA for “at least two” killed and 11 wounded, while CBS News and the BBC both described 20 injured and CBS News reported that the U.S. retaliated by launching strikes on Iranian coastal surveillance radar sites in Goruk and on Qeshm Island.
The BBC added that Iran fired missiles at Israel on Sunday night, and that President Trump later went on Truth Social to announce there would be “no troops going to Beirut” after a call with Netanyahu.
Regional stakes and what comes next
The Guardian described the missile exchange as shattering a fragile ceasefire and marking the most serious escalation since April, saying Iran launched about 10 ballistic missiles at northern Israel and that all the missiles were intercepted or struck open areas.
“Israel strikes Beirut suburb days after US-brokered truce Israel has hit southern Beirut in the first attack on the Lebanese capital since a truce brokered by the US last week”
The Guardian also reported that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said: “Waves of missiles and drones will continue to be launched around the clock for the next seven days until the enemy is deterred and ceases its crimes,” and that it added “Any targeting of Iranian territory will be met with a devastating and overwhelming response beyond all expectation.”
Against that backdrop, CBS News said an adviser to Iran's supreme leader told CNN that negotiations are "at a deadlock" and "the ball is in Trump's court," urging the U.S. to unfreeze billions in Iranian assets.
CBS News further said Trump told Fox News, "You've shot your missiles, that's enough … Get back to the table and make a deal," while the BBC reported that the Dahieh attack threatened to destabilise both mediation tracks.
In Lebanon, France 24 reported that Israel’s strikes on the southern suburb of Beirut were the first since May 28 on this region, and AFP said Israeli strikes on Lebanon have killed 3,613 people since the war began on March 2, while 131 rescuers and health workers have been killed in strikes since the start of the war.
