Ceasefire, then strikes
The Palestinian death toll in Gaza surpassed 73,000, Gaza's Health Ministry said Sunday, as Israel continued to strike inside the territory despite a fragile ceasefire described as stalled.

CBC reported that confirmation of the latest Palestinian toll came from Zaher al-Waheidi, head of the ministry's records department, and Hamza Salem from the ministry's public relations department.

The same CBC account said the number of deaths since the beginning of the war is now 73,001, with five deaths reported on Sunday: two in the southern city of Khan Younis and one in central Gaza, plus two who died of earlier wounds.
CBC also said more than 173,200 people have been wounded since the start of the war, according to the Health Ministry, and that Israel has continued to strike while citing threats posed by Hamas and other militants.
CBC framed the war as ignited by the Hamas-led Oct. 7, 2023, attack into Israel, which killed 1,200 people and took 251 others hostage, according to Israeli tallies.
Israel disputes tallies
Franceinfo reported that the Israeli army spokesperson denied that the army possessed an estimate of more than 71,000 Palestinians killed that Israeli press said it had.
Franceinfo quoted Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani on X, writing: "Tsahal specifies that the information published does not reflect (its) official data," and added that "Any publication or information on this subject will be disseminated through official and appropriate channels,".

In its latest briefing, franceinfo said the Gaza health authorities reported at least 71,667 Palestinians killed by Israeli army fire or strikes over two years and three months.
CBC, meanwhile, described the Health Ministry as part of the Hamas-led government and said it maintains detailed records viewed as generally reliable by United Nations agencies and independent experts.
CBC also said the Health Ministry does not distinguish between civilians and militants but says women and children make up around half of all fatalities.
Wounds and continuing toll
WAFA Agency said a Palestinian citizen succumbed on Sunday evening to wounds sustained from Israeli forces’ gunfire in Gaza City, citing a source at Al-Shifa Hospital.

WAFA also reported that earlier four citizens were killed and others injured in an Israeli shelling in the Jabalia refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip.
WAFA put the death toll from the Israeli aggression on the besieged enclave since October 7, 2023, at 72,996, and said 173,246 others have also been injured.
CBC reported that the war displaced most of the Palestinian population of more than two million and left large parts of the territory in rubble, while creating widespread shortages of food, medicine and other basic supplies as border crossings with Gaza—"all but one controlled by Israel"—slammed shut.
CBC said the U.S.-brokered ceasefire deal reached in October ended full-scale military operations and led to the return of all the remaining hostages, but that other elements of the deal have stalled as Hamas refused to disarm and Israeli troops have advanced in Gaza rather than withdrawn.
