Detention and allegations
Israeli forces abducted about 430 people on board 50 ships in international waters on Tuesday to halt a flotilla of volunteers trying to bring aid supplies to the Gaza Strip, and the Global Sumud Flotilla organisers said the detainees faced abuse while in Israeli detention.

United Nations spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said, "We’re very concerned by these reports," pointing to allegations from activists and videos shared by an Israeli minister showing "the humiliating treatment of the people who were detained by the flotilla".

The Global Sumud Flotilla said it had documented at least 15 cases of sexual abuse, including “humiliating strip searches, sexual taunting, groping and pulling of genitals, and multiple accounts of rape.”
Italian economist Luca Poggi, speaking to Reuters after his arrival in Rome, said, "We were stripped, thrown to the ground, kicked."
The flotilla organisers said the worst abuse occurred on a vessel converted into a makeshift prison, where detainees were thrown into containers and beaten over the head and ribs.
Ben-Gvir’s video sparks
On Wednesday, Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir released a video showing him taunting the foreign activists at an Israeli landing craft converted into a makeshift prison with barbed wire and shipping containers in Israel’s city of Ashdod.
In the video, Ben-Gvir told guards around him, "don’t be bothered by their screams," as dozens of detained activists were displayed with their hands bound and kneeling face down in stress positions.

The BBC reported that Britain’s foreign secretary Yvette Cooper wrote she was "truly appalled" at the video, saying "this violates the most basic standards of respect and dignity."
The Washington Post reported that Netanyahu rebuked Ben-Gvir, saying Israel has every right to stop “provocative flotillas of Hamas terrorist supporters,” but that the way Ben-Gvir released videos did not align with Israel’s values.
The Washington Post also quoted Ben-Gvir saying, "Welcome to Israel, we are the landlords," while an activist shouted “Free Palestine” before being pushed to the ground by security personnel.
Deportations and wider fallout
Israel’s foreign ministry said all of the activists have since been deported, and the activists’ organizers confirmed all of the detained activists are now being released and many are on a flight to Istanbul.

The BBC said deportation procedures for the 430 activists are expected to begin after the Israeli army escorted them to an Israeli prison following the interception of their boats as part of the relief flotilla to Gaza.
The BBC also reported that a human rights organization representing 430 people from more than 40 countries called for their release, while a Palestinian legal aid group said the activists accused Israeli forces of 'violence and psychological torture.'
In a statement, the Palestinian presidency said intercepting the flotilla vessels in international waters “constitutes an illegal act, maritime piracy and a flagrant violation of international law and international humanitarian law.”
The Guardian said the scale of global outrage pushed Netanyahu to issue a public rebuke, quoting Netanyahu that Ben-Gvir’s behaviour was “not in line with Israel’s values and norms,” as the video extended a pattern of televised abuse from Palestinian detainees to foreign activists.
