Air raid and displacement

Israel’s military killed six people in an air raid on a house in southern Lebanon on Monday night, targeting a house in the Kfar Dounin municipality about 100km (60 miles) south of Beirut, Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) said.

The attack came as Israel issued forced displacement orders and threats of further attacks, with the Israeli military’s Arabic-language spokesman Avichay Adraee telling residents to flee from the town of Sohmor in the Bekaa Valley and from towns including Arzoun, Tayr Debba, Bazouriyeh and al-Haush in southern Lebanon.

Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health reported that at least 380 people have been killed during the truce, bringing the total death toll since the Israeli invasion and bombardment began on March 2 to more than 2,800.

Al Jazeera’s Obaida Hitto, reporting from Tyre in southern Lebanon, said there has been a “significant escalation” in attacks in the last week, and he added that many residents who returned after earlier displacement are unwilling to leave again.

The Israeli air force said it has targeted more than 1,100 sites in Lebanon since the so-called truce began, while the Lebanese leaders appealed to the US to press Israel to halt attacks before a third meeting in Washington, DC later this week.

Hezbollah vows and Lebanese talks

Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem announced in a written message to Hezbollah terrorists that the group would not surrender and called for an end to the direct negotiations between Israel and Lebanon.

Qassem said, “We will not surrender, and we will continue to defend Lebanon and its people, however long it takes and however great the sacrifices,” while also asserting that the current direct negotiations “only benefit Israel and involve free concessions from the Lebanese government.”

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun urged the United States to put pressure on Israel to cease fire and stop home demolitions in south Lebanon, and the presidency said Aoun “stressed ... the necessity of pressure on Israel to halt fire and military operations and the destruction and bulldozing of homes.”

Al Jazeera’s Rory Challands from Beirut said the upcoming Israel-Lebanon meeting in the US “essentially determine[s] the next phase of this ceasefire, which is really hanging on in name only,” and he added that a face-to-face sit-down between Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was “off the table for the moment.”

Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem also pledged never to abandon the battlefield despite the Lebanese government’s push to disarm the group, saying “Nobody outside Lebanon has anything to do with the weapons, the resistance … this is an internal Lebanese matter and not part of negotiations with the enemy.”

Escalation, strikes, and stakes

Al Jazeera said Israel showed no signs of slowing its military operations on Tuesday, issuing new forced displacement orders and threats of further attacks even after an April 16 ceasefire that Hezbollah also exchanged fire during.

In a separate account, PressTV said Hezbollah carried out 20 defensive military operations against invading Israeli occupation forces in southern Lebanon, including targeting gatherings of Israeli soldiers and military vehicles in towns of al-Bayyadah, Rishaf, and Tayr Harfa using rocket barrages, artillery shells, and explosive drones.

PressTV claimed Hezbollah “shot down an Israeli surveillance drone over the Tyre region using a surface-to-air missile,” and it also said Hezbollah executed a multi-stage attack in Taybe that involved three consecutive explosive drone strikes on a house occupied by Israeli personnel.

The Guardian described Israel’s destruction in southern Lebanon as happening in phases, saying Israel ordered roughly 14.3% of Lebanon’s territory to be vacated and that the “yellow line” comprised about 608 sq km, or approximately 6% of Lebanese territory, occupied by Israeli soldiers after the 17 April ceasefire.

Against that backdrop, the Jerusalem Post reported that Qassem asserted Lebanon would not return to the state of affairs that existed before March 2, while Al Jazeera reported that Lebanon’s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam asked US Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa to “exert pressure on Israel to stop the ongoing attacks and violations, in order to consolidate the ceasefire.”
