“Source: The Central Thursday, May 28, 2026 23:38:04 The Arnoun Municipality condemned the Israeli bombardment of Qal'at al-Shuqayf (Shuqayf Castle) in southern Lebanon, stating that the attack targeted "one of the most prominent archaeological and heritage landmarks of national, cultural, and humanitarian value”
Intense fighting raged in Khiam throughout the night from Saturday to Sunday between Hezbollah fighters and the Israeli army, and at dawn an Israeli raid on an apartment in Charhabil in the Sidon (Saïda) district killed Hamas official Wissam Taha and left several people wounded, according to local media.

Hezbollah said it targeted early Sunday a gathering of Israeli soldiers near Odeisseh, as well as at the Avivim base, with a “powerful salvo of rockets,” while the Israeli Air Force conducted several rounds of strikes in different localities in southern Lebanon on Saturday.
The strikes caused significant material damage to homes and infrastructure in several areas, and the deadliest strike hit the locality of Meifadoun in the Nabatieh District, where four people were killed and five others wounded.
In its daily report, Lebanon’s Health Ministry said the toll from the Israeli offensive in Lebanon has risen to 826 dead and 2,009 wounded between March 2 and March 14.
Hezbollah claims and rockets
Hezbollah said it carried out a series of attacks throughout the day, notably targeting gatherings of Israeli soldiers south of Khiam, near the city’s prison, and in the Rabb Thalathine area.
The movement said it specifically targeted the new Blat military site in southern Lebanon with a “precision” missile, and it also claims to have targeted two Merkava tanks near the Jal al-Allam site, saying it recorded direct hits.

Hezbollah further said it fired a volley of rockets toward the headquarters of the Israeli 146th Division east of Nahariya, and it launched several volleys of rockets toward various localities in northern Israel and targeted the air defense system located in the Maalot-Tarshiha region.
In parallel, the Israeli Air Force conducted several rounds of strikes in different localities in southern Lebanon on Saturday, with four consecutive raids notably targeting the town of Tyre.
The same report described direct fighting and a surge in attacks claimed by Hezbollah, with the movement saying its fighters are using light and medium weapons as well as rockets in these clashes.
Heritage at risk in Arnoun
The Arnoun Municipality condemned the Israeli bombardment of Qal'at al-Shuqayf (Shuqayf Castle) in southern Lebanon, stating that the attack targeted "one of the most prominent archaeological and heritage landmarks of national, cultural, and humanitarian value."
“What south Lebanon’s destroyed villages mean to their people 'Arnoun was once a thriving village”
The municipality said in a statement that the bombardment comes in parallel with "the blowing up of residential houses and destruction of neighborhoods and infrastructure, and the forcible displacement of residents from their land and homes," and it emphasized that the castle "is not just an archaeological site, but a living witness to the history of the region and the resilience of its people through the centuries."
It noted that the castle had been granted in 2024 "enhanced protection" under the Second Protocol to the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, deeming that targeting it constitutes "a clear and explicit violation of international laws and covenants related to the protection of cultural and human heritage."
The municipality urged the Lebanese Ministry of Culture and international organizations concerned with world heritage to act immediately to stop the attacks and protect the site from further damage.
Meanwhile, the Ici Beyrouth report said Israeli artillery bombardments hit the environs of Yohmor el-Chaqif and Arnoun in the Nabatieh District, and it also said the town of Naqoura was struck by artillery fire.
