The IFJ said on 20 June that Ahmed Wishah, a cameraman for Al Jazeera Mubasher, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in central Gaza when an Israeli drone struck a home in the Bureij refugee camp.

The IFJ also recorded that Mohammed Samir Wishah, a correspondent for Al Jazeera Mubasher, was killed in an Israeli strike on his vehicle in western Gaza on 8 April 2026.

In response to the killings, the IFJ called for an immediate investigation and said it was working closely with PJS to verify information in real time and document all killings.

The IFJ framed the danger for reporters on the ground by reminding journalists that "No story is worth the life of a journalist."

Accusations, denials, and debate

Al Jazeera rejected Israeli claims that its journalist Ahmed Wishah belonged to Hamas, condemning what it called a "network of baseless accusations" used to justify attacks on media workers and photographers.

The Israeli army said in a statement late Saturday that Ahmed Wishah was killed in a "precise airstrike" along with two other Hamas fighters, and noted that he was a "sniper" in Hamas's military wing.

In a separate account, The Times of Israel described how Gazan terror groups later identified some slain journalists as fighters, citing the June 1 announcement by the PIJ military wing that Ahmed Abu Eisha had been a unit commander and operative in its "Central Information Unit."

The Times of Israel also said CPJ removed eight other Palestinians from its list after determining they had "participated in combat," and that its list once included 276 names but now sits at 259.

Sharif Abdel Kouddous of Drop Site News told Democracy Now! that "We don’t see the type of outrage that we would see if a Western journalist was killed by a country that is not a U.S. ally."

Ceasefire claims and what’s at stake

Democracy Now! said Israel was continuing to attack Gaza despite the so-called ceasefire, adding that Israeli strikes killed Ahmed Wishah and at least six people including two children on Saturday.

The program also said Israel has now killed over 260 journalists in Gaza, including at least 12 working for Al Jazeera, since October 2023.

In studio, Sharif Abdel Kouddous argued that the lack of consequences for Israel from Western backers in the U.S. and Europe and the editorial approach of many Western media institutions help enable the killings.

In the same broadcast, Talal al-Arouqi said the Israeli occupation "deliberately assassinates journalists, largely and directly, during its war of extermination" to suppress images and prevent dissemination of messages.

The International Federation of Journalists, meanwhile, reiterated its call for an immediate investigation into the deaths of journalists and media workers, while documenting killings in real time with PJS.
