Manchester United Agree To Sign Atalanta Midfielder Éderson For Michael Carrick

Manchester United reached an agreement with Atalanta to sign midfielder Éderson for an initial €40.5m (£35m), with the Brazilian set to be the first signing of Michael Carrick’s tenure as the permanent manager.

The deal is described as potentially worth up to €45m (£38.8m) with add-ons, and personal terms have been agreed on a contract that will expire in June 2030 with an option to extend for 12 months.

The summer transfer window opens on 15 June, and while the move is likely to be completed early next month, the player has yet to undertake a medical.

The Guardian also tied the move to Carrick’s midfield rebuild, noting that Manchester United are making Éderson their first signing as they prepare for the Champions League return.

Sky Sports framed the signing as a flexible option for Carrick, arguing that Ederson can adapt to the Premier League and bring the dynamism Carrick needs in midfield.

The New York Times reported the fixed fee as €40.5million ($47m; £35m) plus €4.5m ($5m; £4m) in potential add-ons, and said Ederson must still undergo a medical with all parties intending to complete the switch in early July.

talkSPORT said the agreement is rising to £38.8million, with United paying an initial £35m and almost £4m in potential future add-ons, and it added that Ederson will pen a deal at Old Trafford until 2030 with an option of a further 12 months.

The Guardian said the midfielder is identified as a replacement for Casemiro, whose contract has now expired and who has left the club, and it placed Éderson as a holding player with the ability to make runs box to box.

The Mirror’s update described a four-year contract with an option for a further 12 months once he has completed a medical, and it said the deal is expected to be wrapped up by early July.

The Athletic’s Andy Mitten, as quoted by Football365, said he “fully expect[s] that to be done within the next 24-48 hours,” even while noting that “Manchester United and Atalanta of Bergamo do not yet have a full agreement” for Ederson.

The transfer is positioned as part of a broader midfield overhaul after Casemiro’s departure, with Sky Sports saying United need different options as they seek to replace the departing Casemiro and the “disappointingly limited Manuel Ugarte.”

Sky Sports also quoted Tiago Nunes on Ederson’s characteristics, saying: "I think he has the characteristics to play a more purposeful game or a transition game."

The Guardian described Ederson as the first signing of Carrick’s permanent era, and it said Carrick is intent on signing two new midfielders with targets including Real Madrid’s Aurélien Tchouaméni, Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, and Elliot Anderson.
