Mitch McConnell Admitted To Hospital After Undisclosed Medical Reason, Office Refuses Details

Sen. Mitch McConnell, the 84-year-old Kentuckian, was admitted to a hospital this weekend for an undisclosed medical reason, and his office refused to say what caused the hospitalization or provide details about his condition.

CP24 reported that McConnell spoke to Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Senate GOP Whip John Barrasso on Monday evening and checked in about the floor schedule while the leaders also declined to comment on details of the hospitalization.

Thune told CNN on Monday that when he spoke to McConnell he “sounded good,” and said McConnell “wants to be back” but that he would defer to staff on timing.

CNN said McConnell was admitted to a hospital Sunday morning, and a statement from a spokesperson for the Kentucky Republican said he was receiving “excellent care.”

ABC News said Majority Leader John Thune told reporters Monday that he has spoken with Sen. Mitch McConnell after his Sunday hospitalization, adding “He sounded good. He wants to be back.”

ABC News also quoted McConnell’s office statement that “Senator McConnell is fully engaged with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters and is very appreciative of the outstanding care he is receiving.”

Thune told ABC News he deferred to McConnell’s staff about when McConnell will return to Capitol Hill, saying “He is clearly dialed in to what's going on.”

CNN reported that Barrasso, the No. 2 Senate Republican, said McConnell was “good” and “looking forward to getting back,” and Barrasso added, “He said he wants to get back this week.”

CP24 said McConnell has faced a series of health issues in recent years, including a March 2023 concussion and broken ribs after a fall and a later incident in which he froze midsentence during a news conference.

CP24 also reported that CNN later said McConnell had suffered two other falls earlier that year, and it quoted Sen. John Kennedy saying he texted McConnell last night and hadn’t heard back while calling him “tough as a bald owl.”

ABC News said McConnell is set to retire at the end of his term in January, and it described the hospitalization as the latest in a string of medical incidents.

CNN reported that Sen. Susan Collins told CNN she hasn’t spoken with McConnell since his hospitalization but said “oh definitely” when asked if she expects him to be back, while the leaders continued to decline to comment on details about the hospitalization.
