OpenAI Prepares Biggest ChatGPT Redesign Into Super App With Coding Tools And AI Agents

OpenAI is preparing what the Financial Times described as its biggest redesign of ChatGPT since launch, aiming to transform the chatbot into a “super app” that combines coding tools and AI agents.

The plan, reported by the Seoul Economic Daily, would allocate greater computing resources to Codex than to the chatbot, as OpenAI shifts operational direction ahead of an initial public offering (IPO).

The overhaul is expected to begin within weeks as the ChatGPT website and mobile app are changed, with the interface also expected to be revamped to steer users toward apps created by partners such as Canva and Booking.com.

In the long term, OpenAI plans to eliminate this feature, expecting that models will automatically grasp users' intent, according to the Seoul Economic Daily’s account of the FT reporting.

The move is framed as part of OpenAI’s push to secure profitable enterprise customers, with the Seoul Economic Daily reporting that the 2 million companies using OpenAI products account for about 40% of revenue.

A senior OpenAI employee told the Financial Times, as quoted by multiple outlets, that “the chatbot is dead,” reflecting a strategy shift toward agents and coding tools.

The Jerusalem Post, citing the FT, reported that “Chat is dead,” one senior OpenAI employee told FT when asked about the future pathway for the company.

In the same FT-based reporting, Thibault Sottiaux—described by the Jerusalem Post as having previously run Codex and now leading all of OpenAI’s core product and platform—said, “You can connect through it on your mobile, desktop, or web. When you’re in the car, you can talk to it,” as OpenAI positions a personal agent across daily life and work.

SiliconANGLE also said the superapp is described as a desktop client combining ChatGPT with the ChatGPT Atlas browser and Codex programming assistant, and that the offering is expected to launch by September.

OpenAI’s superapp pivot is being tied to IPO timing and revenue goals, with the Seoul Economic Daily reporting that OpenAI expects the enterprise share of revenue to rise to 50% by the end of the year.

The Fortune account, citing the Financial Times, said the company plans to transform ChatGPT into a comprehensive “superapp” ahead of its highly anticipated IPO later this year, with changes set to roll out in the coming weeks.

Fortune reported that OpenAI’s software-writing product, Codex, saw its active user base increase six fold to more than 5 million weekly since its launch, while the company’s 2 million business customers account for roughly 40% of revenue.

In parallel, the SiliconANGLE report said MIT Technology Review expects an “AI research intern” tool designed to make researchers more productive to launch by September, and described OpenAI’s longer-term goal as a “fully automated multi-agent research system.”

The Brussels Times, also citing the Financial Times, said the overhaul reflects a shift in OpenAI’s vision beyond chatbots answering questions, as OpenAI aims to turn ChatGPT into a gateway for programming resources and partner services like Canva and Booking.com.
