Journalists displaced, media targeted

The Freedoms Committee of the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate said that between 60% and 75% of surviving journalists in the Gaza Strip have lost their houses or been forcibly displaced since October 7, 2023, describing the situation as unprecedented targeting that has affected journalists’ lives, workplaces, and homes.

In its report titled “Media Without Walls,” the committee said it estimates that about 265 journalists have been killed since the beginning of the Israeli aggression and that about 1,200 journalists remain in Gaza, with an estimated 700–900 displaced.

The committee said that over 80% of media offices and institutions have been destroyed or damaged, leaving journalists to work from shelters, tents, or public spaces using mobile phones and unstable internet connections.

It added that the loss of houses and workplaces has severely affected journalists’ safety, professional standards, and ability to document events, and it called for urgent international protection for journalists and support for safe working spaces in Gaza.

Hunger risk for AFP staff

The AFP Journalists' Association warned that AFP journalists in Gaza risk “dying of hunger,” saying it has “lost journalists in conflicts” before but “none of us recalls having seen a colleague die of hunger.”

The association said it fears for the lives of its 10 journalists still in Gaza, describing colleagues as “worn down by hunger” and issuing daily calls for help as they become physically and morally weakened.

A 30-year-old AFP photographer, Bashar, wrote on Facebook that “I no longer have the strength to work for the media,” saying he has lived since February in the ruins of his Gaza City home with his mother, his four brothers and sisters, and the family of one of his brothers.

The SDJ said journalists’ movements are also made impossible by fuel shortage and security risks, and it warned that “We risk hearing of their deaths at any moment and this is unbearable for us.”

Cold, displacement, and evacuations

Farhan Haq, the UN deputy spokesperson for the Secretary-General, told reporters in New York that the death brought the total number of cold-related fatalities this season to nine, while OCHA called for urgent solutions including authorizing entry of batteries and solar panels for community heating spaces.

UN News also said that since the start of the year more than 860,000 people have received food parcels distributed through 50 distribution points, and that UN health partners vaccinated 3,000 children under three years old during the first two days of a 10-day routine vaccination campaign that began on Sunday.

Separately, UN News reported that the WHO facilitated another medical evacuation on Monday transporting 21 patients and their escorts to Jordan, while more than 18,000 patients, including 4,000 children, are still waiting to be evacuated to receive medical care unavailable in Gaza.
