The announcement came less than 24 hours after U.S. President Donald Trump finished his state visit to China, where he met Xi to discuss trade and the U.S. and Israel’s war in Iran, with Trump posting two photos of himself and Xi on Truth Social.

France 24 reported that Putin’s trip would come "hot on the heels" of Trump’s visit, and said Putin would discuss with Xi how to "further strengthen the comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation" between Moscow and Beijing.

The Kremlin also said Putin is scheduled to discuss economic and trade cooperation with Chinese Premier Li Qiang as part of the visit.

Trade, Taiwan, and Iran

CBS News said Wendy Cutler, a former negotiator in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, told the outlet that "so far, it doesn't seem like Trump and his team have a lot to show for the visit."

CBS also said questions about U.S. aid to Taiwan lingered after Trump still had not decided whether to move forward with a delayed $14 billion arms sale that Congress approved in January.

France 24 reported that Trump left China on Friday without appearing to secure a breakthrough on the Russian war on Ukraine or the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, and it said negotiations to end the fighting in Ukraine brokered by the United States had appeared stalled.

In a separate account, The Times of India said Taiwan emerged as one of the most sensitive issues during Trump’s meetings with Xi, and it noted that Trump said he had not yet decided whether to proceed with a major US arms package for Taiwan after hearing Xi’s objections.

Al Jazeera added that Trump and Xi touted broad trade deals but appeared to make little public progress on sticking points related to Taiwan or the US-Israeli war on Iran, while also touching on the Russia-Ukraine war in which China is officially neutral.

What’s at stake next

The Kremlin’s framing of the Putin-Xi talks centers on strengthening Moscow-Beijing ties, with Al Jazeera saying Putin and Xi plan to "further strengthen the comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation" between Moscow and Beijing.

CNN Arabic reported Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov saying Putin hopes to discuss the results of Trump’s China visit directly with Xi, describing it as "a good opportunity to exchange views on the contacts that have taken place" between the Chinese and the Americans.

The Times of India said Putin is expected to exchange views on "key international and regional issues" and sign a joint declaration at the end of the talks, while also meeting Premier Li Qiang to discuss economic and trade cooperation.

Nikkei Asia described Trump’s China visit as including discussions on the Iran war, trade, tensions over Taiwan, and artificial intelligence, and it quoted a visiting fellow at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute saying "No major breakthroughs were expected and none were achieved" at the summit.

In the background of the diplomacy, Al Jazeera said China has denied reports that Chinese firms have sustained Russian drone production, and it noted that China is officially neutral on the Russia-Ukraine war while presenting itself as a mediator.
