Precipitation will begin as a mixture of rain and sleet across southern New England, then settle into mainly rain south of the Mass Pike and a mix of sleet, freezing rain and snow to the north.

Ice Accretion Warning

CBS News highlights serious ice accretion concerns north of the Pike, warning that untreated roadways will quickly become slick and treacherous.

The greatest concern for ice accretion (freezing rain) is in southern Worcester County and in Western Massachusetts and Connecticut, where up to .25" or more could accrete on power lines, trees and any untreated surfaces.

After midnight, CBS reports temperatures will cool just enough for sleet to change over to snow across northern portions of Worcester, Middlesex and Essex counties as well as southern New Hampshire.

Regional snow and thaw forecast

The forecast calls for 3-6" of snow in northern Middlesex County, most of Essex County and southeastern New Hampshire.

It calls for 1-3" of sleet and snow in Worcester County, southern Middlesex County and Suffolk County, and expects only some scattered coatings of sleet just to the south of the Pike.

CBS News warns of pockets of localized flooding across southeastern Massachusetts, where it expects between 1-1.5" of rain over an area that still has a very extensive snowpack.

The outlet says the weather story will shift toward warmth next week, with highs between 60-70 degrees Sunday through at least Tuesday, and that such warmth and a higher sun angle should melt just about all of the snow cover by this time next week.
