Anadolu Ajansı reported that on Wednesday the Jerusalem Governorate said Israeli authorities verbally notified about 50 Palestinians to evacuate their shops and commercial facilities in the al-Mashtal area at the main entrance to al-Eizariya before Sunday morning, in preparation for implementing demolition orders issued in August 2025.

Anadolu Ajansı also said the governorate warned Israeli authorities threatened to demolish the facilities along with their contents if owners failed to comply within the specified deadline.

The Society of Saint Yves said the demolition decision lacks a genuine legal basis, particularly since claims related to “unlicensed construction” require formal notices and an opportunity for owners to submit licensing applications and objections under Jordanian-era laws still applied in the area.

Lawyers file emergency petition

WAFA said the St. Yves center obtained an urgent order from the Israeli Supreme Court to temporarily freeze the demolition of approximately 50 shops at the entrance to the town of Al-Eizariya after lawyers Nusrat Dakour and Haitham Khatib filed an urgent petition with the Supreme Court.

WAFA reported that the decision came after intensive legal action over the past Friday and Saturday and that the demolitions were scheduled to take place Sunday morning.

Yaffa News Network said the ruling came after an emergency petition was submitted to the Supreme Court by attorneys Nasrat Dakour and Haitham Khatib representing the center to halt demolition operations scheduled for Sunday morning.

Yaffa News Network added that shop owners had received verbal notices last Wednesday instructing them to evacuate their premises ahead of the planned demolition, and it said most of the shops had not received formal written demolition orders.

Yaffa News Network quoted the center emphasizing that the petition raises fundamental legal questions about the basis used by the authorities to carry out demolitions and noted that under applicable Jordanian law in the area, the issuance of formal notices and opportunities to file objections and regularization requests are required.

E1-linked road dispute

Anadolu Ajansı said the petition also aims to gain time for shop owners to confront a broader project linked to a settlement road, believed to be connected to the planned demolitions, tied to the controversial E1 illegal settlement project.

Anadolu Ajansı described the E1 plan as aiming to connect occupied East Jerusalem with illegal settlements east of the city, including Maale Adumim, through land confiscation and construction of new illegal settlements.

The Society of Saint Yves said the project includes infrastructure plans designed to separate Palestinian and illegal occupants through separate road systems, including tunnels for Palestinians and surface roads for occupiers.

Yaffa News Network said the petition also aims to allow shop owners to challenge measures linked to the so-called “Life Fabric Road” project, which it said is believed to be connected to the planned demolitions as part of expansion works.

WAFA said St. Yves stressed that its legal teams have been working around the clock and expressed hope that the freeze decision will be a first step enabling citizens to defend their legal and human rights through available legal and advocacy channels.
