England dominated Group K in Uefa qualifying to book their place at next summer’s World Cup, winning all eight games without conceding a goal, but then disappointed in March’s international friendlies against Uruguay and Japan.

Tuchel has made clear that he wants to build a squad with clearly defined roles, including two players for every position on the pitch, plus a third goalkeeper and three versatile outfield players to round out the 26.

The road to the tournament includes warm-up friendlies against New Zealand and Costa Rica, before England start their World Cup campaign against Croatia on 17 June, with further group games against Ghana and Panama.

Maguire confirmed his omission in a social media post on Thursday, writing, "I've been left shocked and gutted by the decision," and he added, "I wish the players all the best this summer."

The BBC says Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins is set to be included alongside Al-Ahli striker Ivan Toney, who has scored 32 goals in 32 games in the Saudi Arabian league this season.

The BBC also reports that Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White is set to miss out, despite being the top-scoring English player in the Premier League this season, alongside Watkins and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, on 14 goals.

Tuchel’s selection choices extend to the left-back position, with Luke Shaw expected to miss out despite being named in Tuchel's 55-man provisional squad, while Dan Burn and Nico O’Reilly are in line to be called up.

The World Cup takes place across the US, Mexico and Canada, and the BBC reports it starts on 11 June, with England’s campaign beginning against Croatia on 17 June.

Tuchel’s squad planning is framed around chemistry and role clarity, and The Guardian quotes him saying, "we must make the right choice" when discussing how players succeed when the connection and communication at camp are right.

The BBC says Foden has played 49 times for England but started only 22 Premier League games for City this season, scoring seven goals and providing five assists across his 32 top-flight appearances, while Palmer has scored nine goals in 25 Premier League games during an injury-hit campaign for Chelsea.

With the final 26-man squad due to be named on Friday and England facing Croatia, Ghana and Panama in Group L, the omissions of Maguire, Tomori and Colwill mean John Stones is very likely to be included, despite his injury-disrupted campaign.
