Key Takeaways

- The agreement centers on a 14-point framework to end the conflict and reopen Hormuz.
- The deal is interim, with final settlement negotiations planned later.
Ceasefire Includes Lebanon
President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the war between the United States and Iran and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, with the agreement taking “immediate effect,” Pakistan’s premier Shehbaz Sharif said.
The deal’s text, as read out by a senior US official, says the US, Iran and their allies will declare an “immediate and permanent” termination of military operations on “all fronts, including Lebanon,” and ensure “the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Lebanon.”

The BBC reported the 14-point agreement is set to reopen the “pivotal Strait of Hormuz,” and said it commits a $300bn fund for the “reconstruction and economic development” of Iran while stating the US is not required to contribute.
The ABC said the agreement reiterates Iran’s commitment that it will not procure or develop nuclear weapons, while leaving key questions around the nuclear program to final negotiations.
In Lebanon, the CNN live updates said the text calls for “the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon,” while noting Israel has vowed it will not withdraw from Lebanon.
Israel Pushback, US Response
CNN reported US Vice President JD Vance criticized Israeli operations in Lebanon, saying they’ve “sometimes gotten in the way of negotiations,” and he added, “If I was in the cabinet of the Israeli government, I might not be attacking the only powerful ally that I have anywhere left in the entire world.”
In the same CNN update, President Donald Trump said the United States expects a “complete ceasefire on all fronts” as he called on “everyone in the Middle East” to uphold their commitments, and the text of the memorandum of understanding calls for “the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon.”

Al Jazeera reported Trump posted that he expects “a complete ceasefire on all fronts, including Lebanon, Hezbollah and Israel,” and said the interim deal extends the ceasefire for 60 days.
The BBC said the agreement notes that “from now on” neither side will initiate military operations or threaten each other, and ensure “the territorial integrity and sovereignty” of Lebanon, while stating it is unclear how Israel will react to this point.
The ABC reported that fighting has continued between Israel and Hezbollah, with more Israeli strikes reported and explosive Hezbollah drones launched at Israeli soldiers, injuring five, even as the Lebanon-related ceasefire language remained in the MoU.
What’s at Stake Next
The Guardian said the deal commits both sides and their allies to cease hostilities and refrain from the threat or use of force against each other, while adding that Israel retains the right to strike back if Hezbollah attacks, and it said Washington and Iran have 60 days to reach a final deal endorsed by a binding UN security council resolution.
The Guardian also reported that the memorandum reportedly includes the full resumption of maritime traffic “with no charge” in the strait of Hormuz, the lifting of a US blockade of Iranian ports, the waiving of US sanctions on Iran, the unfreezing of its assets, and a $300bn investment fund for Iran’s post-war reconstruction.
The BBC said the agreement is described by the Trump administration as “performance-based,” with Iran benefitting only if it complies with its commitments, and it said the final agreement will lead to the permanent “termination” of the conflict, including in Lebanon.
In Lebanon’s immediate context, the ABC said the text released by the White House makes more specific comments about the situation in Lebanon, including an “immediate and permanent” end to fighting on all fronts, including Lebanon, while also describing a dispute over the future of Israeli forces inside seized and occupied Lebanese territory.
Scripps News said the draft agreement calls for sanctions relief for Iran and says the US will begin removing its naval blockade and “any disturbances or impediments,” while the MoU text also states the US and Iran undertake “from now on not to initiate any war or any military operation against each other” and to ensure Lebanon’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
