Ali Akbar Velayati Says Strait of Hormuz Is Iran’s Real Guarantor of Nuclear Deal
Key Takeaways
- Strait of Hormuz is the real guarantor of any nuclear deal, says Velayati.
- Papers and signatures are not guarantees; Iran's red line is explicit.
- Statement posted on X; IRNA and Islam Times report it.
Hormuz as guarantee
Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior advisor to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, said on Wednesday that nothing can guarantee the survival of a nuclear deal except for the Strait of Hormuz, which he called the “real guarantor” of such a deal.
In his post on social media platform X, Velayati said, “The red line of Iran is clear. This time, papers and signatures are not guarantees,” and argued that “Geography does not lie, and it is the final judge of any written treaty.”

Islam Times and IRNA both framed the Strait of Hormuz as Iran’s decisive leverage, with Islam Times adding that the waterway handles approximately one-fifth of global oil transit.
Islam Times also said that since the US-Israeli war against Iran began on February 28, the IRGC Navy has taken full control of the strait, while a Pakistani-mediated ceasefire was brokered on April 8 but Iran maintained its authority over the waterway.
Voices repeat the line
ISNA News Agency echoed Velayati’s argument that “papers and signatures do not constitute guarantees,” and it described the Strait of Hormuz as the “objective guarantor of an agreement's survival.”
In the same X post as quoted by IRNA English, Velayati wrote, “This time, papers and signatures are not guarantees,” and he added that “Geography does not lie, and it is the final judge of any written treaty.”

Mehr News Agency similarly reported that Velayati said the Strait of Hormuz is the ‘real guarantor’ of any potential deal with the united States, repeating the same “red line” formulation from his social media post.
Across these outlets, Velayati also tied the argument to Iran’s historical narrative, writing that invaders from Alexander to Genghis Khan to Donald Trump had been “digested” by Iran’s civilization.
What it means next
Islam Times said that Iran’s position has become clearer after years of repeated US hostility, coercion, and violations of international commitments, and it asserted that Tehran no longer considers documents and signatures sufficient guarantees.
Velayati told readers that “The objective guarantee for preserving any agreement is the Strait of Hormuz,” and he argued that “Geography does not lie, and it is the final judge of treaties written on paper.”
Islam Times further stated that since the US-Israeli war against Iran began on February 28, the IRGC Navy has taken full control of the strait, and it said Iran maintained its authority over the waterway after the Pakistani-mediated ceasefire brokered on April 8.
By placing the Strait of Hormuz at the center of any future agreement, Velayati’s message framed the waterway as the decisive factor for preserving a deal, rather than relying on written commitments alone.
