Strikes after Hormuz drone hit
The US military carried out strikes on Iranian missile and drone storage sites and coastal radar sites after ships were struck by drones in the Strait of Hormuz, with the retaliation tied to an Iranian attack on a commercial ship the day before.
“Paul Musgrave, an associate professor of political science at Georgetown University in Qatar, argued that the American war against Iran represents a strategic defeat far larger than the defeat the United States suffered in the Vietnam War”
The Independent reported that the US said Iran hit M/V Ever Lovely on Thursday with a one-way attack drone, and it said Donald Trump accused Tehran of a “foolish violation” of the ceasefire agreement.

CENTCOM said the strikes were a “powerful response” to Iran’s “dangerous behavior,” and it reported that US aircraft struck Iranian missile and drone storage locations and coastal radar sites.
CBS News said the US hit Iranian targets on Friday over Iran’s drone attack on a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, calling it the first American strikes on Iran since the two countries agreed to extend an already “rickety ceasefire” last week.
The Independent also said UN shipping agency temporarily paused its scheme to evacuate hundreds of stranded ships and thousands of seafarers from the Gulf after the Taiwanese ship was damaged close to the Omani side of the waterway.
Trump, Rubio, and ongoing retaliation
President Trump called Iran’s attack a “foolish violation” of the ceasefire, and CBS News said he was asked whether Iran would face consequences and replied, “You'll find out,” while also saying “We knocked down three of them.”
CBS News reported that a U.S. official told CBS News the retaliatory strikes against Iran are ongoing, and it said the strikes targeted Iranian missile and drone storage facilities and radar sites.

The Independent said Trump posted on Truth Social that one drone damaged a cargo ship while the other three were “knocked down,” and it said he did not name the ship.
On the diplomatic front, CBS News said Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a framework of a deal between Lebanon and Israel, and it said Hezbollah was not part of the negotiations.
The Independent also said Iranian media reported a projectile strike near a pier in Sirik in southern Iran on Friday after the US military said it had conducted strikes against Iran.
Funding request and wider stakes
The BBC reported that the White House asked lawmakers to approve $87.6bn (£66.5bn), mostly for “urgent needs” connected with the US war on Iran, and it said $67bn of the request was for the US Department of Defence.
The BBC said the proposal faced an uphill battle in Congress, and it reported that the White House Office of Management and Budget sent the formal request in a letter to House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson.
The BBC also said the request includes $21bn for munitions, $17.3bn for operational costs, and $12.1bn for classified programmes, while it asked for about $300m to bolster security at US embassies and diplomatic outposts in the Middle East and South Asia.
In parallel, the Independent said the UN shipping agency temporarily paused its scheme to evacuate hundreds of stranded ships and thousands of seafarers from the Gulf after the Taiwanese ship was damaged close to the Omani side of the waterway.
Al Jazeera said the US and Israel are holding talks in Switzerland with a memorandum of understanding in place establishing a 60-day ceasefire and framework for negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions relief and the future of the Strait of Hormuz.
