Israel Strikes Beirut Southern Suburbs As US-Iran Peace Deal Signing Nears in Switzerland

On June 14, 2026, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on X that the United States and Iran had reached a “Peace Deal” after “intensive talks,” with both sides declaring the “immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon.”

Sharif said the “official signing ceremony would take place in Switzerland on June 19,” and added that “mediators will facilitate a series of meetings this week.”

The announcement came as Israel carried out strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs, with Trump telling Barak Ravid that the signing was “still on track” despite “the Israeli strike in Beirut and the Iranian threat to retaliate.”

In a separate NBC News interview, Trump said the attack should not disrupt the process, writing that “Israel has the right to defend itself against threats” but that the strike it responded to was “very small and meaningless; nobody was hurt, injured, or killed.”

Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf challenged U.S. credibility after Israeli strikes hit Beirut’s southern suburb of Dahiyeh, writing that “America either lacks the will to fulfil its commitments or the ability to do so.”

In a post on X, Ghalibaf also said the “Zionists’ aggression against Dahiyeh once again showed that the United States either has no will to implement its commitments or lacks the capability to do so.”

Ghalibaf framed the confrontation as a contest of escalation and counter-escalation, posting that “They can never isolate any part of the pillars of resistance alone.”

He added that “The jihad efforts of Lebanon's brave warriors and the powerful diplomacy of the Islamic Republic of Iran will guarantee the sovereignty and territorial integrity of dear Lebanon,” while warning that “Spin as we spin.”

The BBC reported that Ghalibaf said American bases and Israeli interests in the Middle East are “legitimate targets,” arguing that the naval blockade and what he described as giving Israel the green light make American assets in the region legitimate targets.

The BBC also said Trump called for more “precise” strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon, while Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz said the army struck a “terrorist” headquarters in the suburb of Beirut.

Lebanese civil defense officials, cited by Mehr News Agency, said an Israeli airstrike on Beirut’s southern suburb of Dahiyeh killed at least three people and wounded six others.

The BBC further described the wider stakes in Lebanon as Israel continued attacks deep into the country, while the Lebanese Health Ministry said more than 3,500 people had been killed since the war began in early March and more than a million others had been displaced since Hezbollah joined the war on March 2.
