Transition frozen over fraud
Colombia’s president-elect Abelardo de la Espriella suspended the presidential transition process with outgoing President Gustavo Petro after Petro publicly refused to recognize the legitimacy of the June 21 election results, freezing joint sessions a month before the Aug. 7 inauguration.

De la Espriella accused Petro of attempting an institutional coup and said, “Petro is a tyrant in the making, seeking to perpetuate his power by any means necessary,” while also directing Vice President-elect Jose Manuel Restrepo to freeze all communication with the outgoing ministries.
Petro rejected the incoming team’s accusations and, despite refusing to recognize De la Espriella’s narrow runoff victory against officialist candidate Ivan Cepeda, insisted that his refusal does not mean he intends to stay in office past his constitutional term.
The outgoing transition committee coordinator German Avila and Petro both said the technical handover of information will not stop, with Petro concluding, “Empty chairs will be placed in the hope that those who stole the elections will come to understand what it means to govern.”
Armed forces urged
In a video posted on Tuesday on social media, De la Espriella accused Petro and Cepeda of launching a plan to “cling to power at all costs” through “a coup d’état” by refusing to recognize his victory in the June 21 presidential run-off.
He called on the armed forces to disobey any orders from Petro and said, “As president-elect, I call on Colombia’s armed forces to honour their oath to protect the Constitution and democracy and to disobey any orders from Petro to the contrary,” while also urging the international community to monitor the transfer of power.
The dispute has been framed as a breakdown of the presidential transition known in Colombia as empalme, with the BBC describing it as marked by mutual accusations between political rivals Petro and de la Espriella.
Petro, for his part, said he refused to recognize De la Espriella’s victory and alleged fraud without providing evidence, while the South China Morning Post reported that Petro did not immediately respond to De la Espriella’s video accusation.
Inauguration and legal fight
The freeze escalated exactly one month before the handover of power set for August 7, and MercoPress reported that De la Espriella ordered his vice president-elect Jose Manuel Restrepo to suspend transition meetings immediately on Tuesday morning.

MercoPress also said De la Espriella expanded his reasons in an address broadcast from Barranquilla and argued that the outgoing government seeks to cling to power, adding that he would respect peaceful protest but not acts of force.
Petro softened his position later, writing, “I recognize the real people who voted for Abelardo, and I respect them,” and confirming he will hand over power at the end of his term on August 6.
Beyond the transition, Folha de S.Paulo reported that lawyer Luis Guillermo Pérez, close to Petro, said he will file a lawsuit to annul De la Espriella’s election based on arguments including the far-right candidate’s American nationality and alleged irregularities in vote counting.
