Barcelona Agree £69.3m Deal With Newcastle To Sign England Winger Anthony Gordon

Barcelona have reached an agreement with Newcastle United to sign England winger Anthony Gordon, with Sky Sports News understanding the fee is £69.3m (€80m) inclusive of add-ons.

Gordon, who finished this season as Newcastle's top goalscorer with 17 goals, will fly to Barcelona on Thursday to undergo his medical after the deal was agreed on Wednesday.

Sky Sports News also reported that Bayern Munich were not planning to make a rival bid, while the Sky Sports report said Gordon has four years remaining on his long-term contract extension at St James' Park signed in October 2024.

The BBC said the clubs struck a deal worth in excess of 80m euros (£69.3m), and that Gordon will finalise the formalities of his move before he flies out with his England team-mates to the United States for a training camp before the World Cup.

Sky Sports News' Keith Downie said, "What's interesting is the two clubs who were fighting for his signature are from the continent - Barcelona and Bayern Munich," and linked that to what Gordon did in the Champions League this season.

Downie added that only Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane scored more goals than Gordon's 10 in the Champions League, and he said Gordon can play "a number of positions" including through the middle.

The BBC reported that Bayern Munich also held formal discussions with Newcastle, but there was a gap in valuation between the two clubs and it was Barca who ended up making an acceptable bid.

Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson made it clear they would only sell players on "our terms" in March, and the BBC said the club were in a strong position to command a premium for Gordon, whose contract does not expire until 2030.

The Sky Sports report said the move also raises questions about Marcus Rashford's future, with Callum Bishop asking what happens to Rashford if Gordon comes in.

Bishop said the Manchester United loanee has made it clear that he wants to remain at Barcelona next season and is believed to be willing to take a pay cut, while Sky Sports said United don't want to negotiate another loan deal and believe the £26m option price is more than fair.

The BBC said Newcastle need to trade to rebuild this summer, particularly after a disappointing 12th-placed finish in the Premier League, and that the deal will enable the Magpies to reinvest in the transfer market.

The BBC also said Everton are in line to receive 15% of any profit Newcastle make on Gordon after selling the academy graduate in a deal worth up to £45m in 2023, and it noted Gordon was left on the bench for the final four games of the campaign because head coach Eddie Howe had an eye on the future.
