Bruno Fernandes And Khadija “Bunny” Shaw Win FWA Footballer Of The Year Awards

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was voted footballer of the year in England by soccer writers, while Manchester City striker Khadija “Bunny” Shaw won the women’s award for a second time on Friday.

Sky Sports said Fernandes and Shaw were named FWA Footballers of the Year, with Fernandes becoming the first player at Old Trafford to win the award since Wayne Rooney in 2009/10.

The Hayters reported Fernandes beat Arsenal’s Declan Rice to the award by a mere 28 votes, with Erling Haaland coming in third.

Sky Sports added that Fernandes has eight goals and 19 assists in the Premier League for United, and that Shaw is on course for a third consecutive WSL Golden Boot with 19 goals.

Sky Sports also said Shaw joins Sam Kerr and Fran Kirby to secure the award for a second time, after previously winning in the 2023/24 season.

Sky Sports said Fernandes recorded eight goals and 19 assists in the Premier League this season, and it stated he has created 120 chances this season, according to Opta.

For Shaw, Sky Sports said she has scored 19 goals in 21 Women's Super League games this season, helping City secure their first title in 10 years.

BBC reported Shaw won the vote by a landslide, with Arsenal striker Alessia Russo in second and Chelsea forward Lauren James finishing third.

BBC said Shaw is set to secure a third successive Women's Super League (WSL) Golden Boot after scoring 19 goals in 21 appearances, with one league game remaining for newly crowned champions City.

BBC also reported that Shaw looks set to leave City this summer after talks stalled over a new contract, and it said Chelsea are understood to have offered at least one more year on a contract than City were willing to agree to.

In the same BBC piece, City manager Andree Jeglertz said, "I still hope she's signing a new contract with Manchester City, definitely," while Sky Sports said Sky Sports News has reported Shaw is set to leave City at the end of her contract this summer.

BBC added that City face Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-finals on Sunday (15:30 BST), with the winner playing either Liverpool or Brighton at Wembley on 31 May.

Sky Sports noted that the 31-year-old playmaker needs just one assist in the remaining three games to match the record, and it said Fernandes has been a shining light as United return to the Champions League.
