Final as Diplomacy Stage

U.S. President Donald Trump, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and FIFA President Gianni Infantino were set to share the honor setting at the 2026 World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, with Sheinbaum arriving in the United States on the morning of 19 July aboard a military plane from the Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional (Sedena).

Mundo Ejecutivo CDMX said the presence of the three North American heads of state in the stadium’s honor box marked “un encuentro histórico que refuerza los lazos diplomáticos entre las naciones sede del torneo.”

The same report said the tournament began on 11 June with matches in 16 venues across Mexico, the United States, and Canada, and it culminated with the final at MetLife Stadium.

VOI.ID reported that the final between Argentina and Spain would be held on Monday, July 20 at 2:00 a.m. Indonesia time, and that Trump, Carney, and Sheinbaum would attend in person in New York.

VOI.ID also said Sheinbaum confirmed her attendance after receiving “a direct invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump,” adding that she would record a message with more precise details.

Red-Card Protest Plan

Ahead of the Argentina-Spain showdown, protesters planned to hand out referee-style “red cards” to fans arriving at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., aiming to disrupt the trophy moment for Trump and Gianni Infantino.

The Daily Beast quoted the protest website’s instruction: “After review, for political corruption and abuse of the presidency—the decision is RED CARD!” as cards directed attendees to raise them during the trophy presentation.

Goal said the campaign used the final in New York/Nueva Jersey to distribute cards with a QR code to “Final Red Card,” and it described organizers asking fans to show the cards at the moment of trophy delivery.

The Los Angeles Times said the action would involve “tens of thousands of specialty red cards” and that the mock referee cards would direct people to a website explaining the campaign to denounce Infantino and Trump inside the stadium.

South China Morning Post reported that red cards were handed out in New York and New Jersey to those heading to MetLife Stadium, and it said the cards included a QR code linking to finalredcard.com with instructions on when to hold them aloft.

Why It Matters

The protest campaign tied its message to the controversy over U.S. striker Folarin Balogun’s ban being lifted despite a red card, which organizers said intensified scrutiny of Infantino and Trump in the two weeks before the final.

Goal said the initiative arrived after “dos semanas de fuertes críticas” to Trump e Infantino for the decision to annul the suspension of Balogun, which allowed him to play against Bélgica in the round of 16.

The Daily Beast described Trump’s role in seeking a review, quoting Trump’s acknowledgment that he “asked for a review by FIFA” after learning the red card decision could prevent Balogun from playing the next match.

South China Morning Post said Infantino and Trump had faced heavy criticism after Balogun’s ban was lifted despite receiving a red card, allowing him to play in the last-16 match against Belgium.

With the trophy presentation scheduled to include Trump and Infantino, the protest plan framed the final as both a sporting event and a political stage, with cards meant to be held up during the moment the winning captain receives the World Cup.
