Police said the investigation involved searches of several houses across the Netherlands over two days last week, after information shared by authorities in Germany and the United Kingdom, and they said “Information indicates that possibly multiple women in the Netherlands were drugged by someone in their immediate circle.”

The BBC said the arrests followed police receiving information suggesting multiple women may have been drugged “by someone in their immediate circle” and sexually assaulted on camera, and it said the number of victims was not yet clear.

DutchNews.nl said the searches took place on May 27 and 28 at several locations around the country, and it said detectives identified eight suspects aged 21 to 51 from Rotterdam, Sassenheim, Hilversum, Veldhoven, Sint Willebrord, Amstelveen, and the municipalities of Hulst and Horst aan de Maas.

Police, experts, and victims

Milou van der Kolk of the Rotterdam Sexual Crimes Team said in the police statement that “this is a case with an enormous impact,” describing how victims may not know what happened because they “may have been drugged and were unconscious.”

In an interview with NOS, Gerben Cabboort of the Dutch police’s national expert team on sexual offenses said the conduct was “next level” criminality, and he described police showing up at victims’ doorsteps unexpectedly.

NL Times reported that police identified eight men suspected of drugging partners to rape them and then sharing footage, and it said only one of the four arrested last week was ordered by a magistrate to remain in custody ahead of an arraignment expected later this month.

NL Times also quoted Iva Bicanic of the Center for Sexual Violence (CSG) saying “I have learned from my expertise that anything is possible with sexual violence,” and it said victims were told their husband or boyfriend had been drugging and raping them.

What’s at stake next

Police said it was still unclear how many people were abused, and they said they were trying to identify people who were abused from images on phones and computers seized in raids last week.

DutchNews.nl said examining the seized devices will take time and that it is not yet clear how many women were affected, while it said further arrests have not been ruled out.

The BBC said charges against the suspects vary and include alleged participation in online groups, creation or distribution of sexual imagery, and “endangering victims by drugging them, up to and including (attempted) rape.”

DutchNews.nl added that Victim support organisation Slachtofferhulp Nederland set up a team to help those affected, working with the Centre for Sexual Violence and abuse helpline Veilig Thuis, which it said offers confidential advice 24 hours a day on 0800 2000 or at veiligthuis.nl.
