Fire Engulfs Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao Pub In Bangkok, Kills At Least 27

A fire engulfed the Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao pub in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district, killing at least 27 people and injuring 63 others, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on Monday.

Anutin told reporters that “Twenty-seven bodies were moved out, lifeless bodies,” and said some victims were sent to hospitals while authorities checked their conditions.

Rescuers said the fire was reported around midnight, and firefighters took about half an hour to bring the blaze under control.

The BBC reported that firefighters were called just after midnight on Monday and that Anutin said 27 bodies had been recovered, with others taken to hospital.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser cited Anwut Pho-ampai of the Ruamkatanyu Foundation saying, “There are more than 27 dead,” as local rescuers worked at the scene.

Anutin said a musician performing at the pub told him he saw smoke coming out of a circuit breaker near the stage before the power went out, then an explosion was heard and thick smoke quickly filled the place.

He added that many victims were found at the restrooms at the back of the pub, and DW said there were no fire escapes.

The Jerusalem Post reported that Anutin said the pub rapidly filled with smoke after a fire broke out, forcing many to run to the back of the venue near the bathrooms, but there were no fire escapes.

The BBC described how patrons fled through the flame-enveloped front door and said the cause of the fire was still under investigation, with Anutin telling media he asked the musician what happened.

In televised remarks from the scene, Anutin said, “Some were sent to hospitals, we are checking their conditions.”

While the death toll was repeatedly given as 27, the BBC said “A number of people are still missing,” and reported that more than 60 people were being treated in hospital.

The Jerusalem Post said a Bangkok metropolitan administration official announced that 63 others were injured, and it reported that firefighters needed 35 minutes to bring the flames under control.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation, with Sky News saying Anutin told reporters at the scene that at least 27 people had died and several had been taken to the hospital.

The BBC also reported that local reports said nine men and 18 women make up the 27 who were killed, and that footage posted on X showed flames blasting out of the bar as people ran out.

As the scene remained under emergency response, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported that local rescuers were still working and that the cause of the fire remained under investigation.
