Al Jazeera's Tehran correspondent Abdul Fattah Fayed said authorities arrested on Wednesday 111 cells tied to the former 'royal regime', along with a number of agents who had been in contact with the Israeli Mossad in the northwest of the country.

Fayed noted the arrest of cells described as 'terrorist' that connect to an operations room in one European country, noting that the arrest campaigns are ongoing.

Causes and public response

The Al Jazeera correspondent explained that Iranian officials linked these arrests to attempts to mobilize the street against the regime, especially after the assassination of Ali Larijani, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, and the commander of the Basij forces Brigadier General Gholam Reza Suleimani.

According to Fayed, authorities see that targeting these leaders at this timing aims to 'make room for any popular opposition activity', but the latest protests observed in Tehran street appeared to support the regime and confirm Iranians' resilience and commitment to defending their country and its sovereignty.

Shadow war and legal posture

The ongoing and previous wars in June revealed major security vulnerabilities in Iran, with a string of assassinations of leaders and political, military figures, and Iranian scientists.

Iran and Israel are engaged in a 'shadow war' that has continued for decades, during which Tehran carried out executions of many people accused of links to Mossad and facilitating its operations inside the country.

In recent months, Iranian authorities announced a series of arrests and executions of people convicted of spying for Israel, and the Iranian Parliament in October last year passed a new law tightening penalties on those accused of cooperating with foreign intelligence agencies, especially American and Israeli ones.
